Prompt:

The Dog of Pompeii is a made-up story. However, Louis Untermeyer includes

real people, places, and events to help bring his story to life. Based on the information you
have just read, write a 5-paragraph essay in which you evaluate Louis Untermeyers
accuracy in describing Pompeii before, during, and after Mount Vesuvius erupted.
Louis Untermeyer used and described great details about Pompeii in the story, The
Dog Of Pompeii. Reading it makes it seem like the story actually happened, and its
because of how detailed and historically accurate Mr.Untermeyer wrote the story. The
story is historically accurate and can be proven to be true with evidence. Here are some
details that can be proven with evidence.
In the story, during the life of Pompeii before the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius is
historically accurate. One of the details said that the central square of Pompeii was at the
forum. I know this detail about Pompeii is true because in the textbook, on page 330,
theres a map. The map shows the places that were in Pompeii. The map also shows that
the forum was the central square in Pompeii, and this evidence proves that the detail is
true. Another detail in the story, on page 314, said that in Pompeii there were theaters and
shows of gladiators and athletes. I know this is a fact because on page 331, it shows an
amphitheater in Pompeii, and this evidence shows that the detail is true. These are two
details about Pompeii, before Mt. Vesuvius erupted, that are true.
The story historically accurately described Titos and Bimbos experiences during the
eruption in Pompeii. On page 322, it shows a detail in the story that in Pompeii the ground
shook. I know this is true because on page 334, the page said during to eruption the ground
in Pompeii rumbled. This proves that this detail in the story is true. Another detail, on page
322, in the story it said that the sky in Pompeii was dark and black. I know this detail is a
fact because on page 333, it shows a letter written by a survivor of the eruption of Mt.
Vesuvius in Pompeii. Its a letter that shows a person describing what was the eruption in
Pompeii was like. He writes, ...darkness overspread us, not like that of a moonless or
cloudy night, but a room when it is shut up, and the lamp is put out. This proves that the
detail about the sky was dark in the story is true. These are two details about Pompeii
during the eruption is and can be proven true.
In the story, what happen after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in Pompeii is historically
accurate. On page 323, a detail said that many people died during the eruption of Mt.
Vesuvius in Pompeii. I know his detail is true because on page 329, the page said bodies
were found in Pompeii after the eruption. This proves that the detail is true. On page 324,
another detail says that many artifacts in Pompeii were found by archeologists. I know this
detail is a fact because on page 329, the article on the page said that the archeologists found
many things from Pompeii. For example, old buildings, art, sculptures, and many other
artifacts from Pompeii. This proves that the detail in the story is true. These are two details
about Pompeii after the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius that are true.

reason why I know is because the details about Pompeii before, during, and after the
eruption of Mt. Vesuvius can be proven to be true with evidence.
