FOREVER
Hebrews 13:8; Jesus Christ is the same
yesterday,today,andforever.
There are some people who see the
Orthodox Church as not only very
traditional but out of step with modern
values and fashions an anachronism.
They are quite right. The Church, if it
bearswitnesstoanything,bearswitness
to the unchanging truths found in Holy
Scripture and in the Living Tradition of
theHolyApostleswhichislifeintheHoly
Spirit who is the living memory of the
Church.Romans12:2;Anddonotbecon
formed tothisworld,butbetransformed
by the renewing of your mind, that you
mayprovewhatisthatgoodandaccept
ableandperfectwillofGod.
Oh you are living in the past I
have heard it said about the Orthodox
Church.Rightagain,becauseremembran
ce is essentially bringing to mind that
whichhasbeenrevealedbyGodandthat
islivedtoday.Whatarewetodo?Arewe
meant to erase past reference points of
oursalvation?No,afunctioningmindis
builtuponmemories.Wearetobringthe
holy past into the holy present. That is
whysooftenwerepeatintheLiturgical
cycle Today! At Christmas we say:
TodayisbornofaVirginHewhoholdsthe
Creation in His hand On Holy Friday:
Today He is suspended upon a Tree He
who suspended the earth upon the wa
ters At Pentecost: Today the celestials
join with the terrestrials! As Orthodox
Christians,wedonotforgetthepastwe
arenotdeadtoit,wearealivetoitand
bringthepastintothepresentmoment,
sinceChrististheWay,theTruthandthe
Life, the Alpha and the Omega and
thereforeeverymomentinbetween.AsSt
Paulsays,weneedtobetransformedby
therenewingofourmindthisrenewal

is achieved not by following the latest


trendsbutbyembracingeternalvalues.
Wearenotonlylivinginthepast
wearelivinginthepresentwhichisthe
intersection of time and eternity the
kairosofGod.Weareaccusedbysomeof
beingstubbornandunwillingtoembrace
thechangingpatternsofthought,practi
ceandworship.Rightagain!
Indeed, to be stubborn means to
possessdoggeddeterminationintheface
ofgoodreason.Itwasbecauseofdogged
determination that the Church councils
prevailed against the assaults of early
heresies. The Church would not have
been established without the Apostle
Paulsdoggeddeterminationtotakethe
Gospel of Salvationinto battlewith the
Goliath of the Roman world. Was it
reasonable to take the message of
freedominChristtoaRomansystemof
Governmentbasedonslavery?
TheCelticsaintswereallstubborn
St David! St Herbert! St Columba! St
Patrick!Theyhadtobestubbornand
determinedinordertoplanttheChurch
inthesecoldislands!Theyperseveredin
the face of tremendous obstacles and
opposition; they did not live by good
reason any more than St David the
DendriteofThessalonicawhoatthesame
timeperiodastheCelticSaintslived in
Northern Greece in a tree! Look at St
SimeonStyliteswasitbygoodreason
thathewasmovedtoliveonaplatform
on top of a pillar in the middle of the
SyrianDesert?Wasitreasonableforour
venerableandGodbearingFatherDaniel
theHermitofVoronetoshuthimselfina
caveforfourteenyears?
No,thesesaintslivedouttheirlives
by perfected faith rather than by good
reason. The mystery of the God made
flesh transcends all human intellectual
vanity.Thisiswhywhenweveneratethe
Mother of God in the great Akathist
Hymn we sing: Rejoice, breaker of the
websoftheAthenians'logic.

Weareliving inthe future,forour


ChurchspansHeavenandEarthbecause
ofChristsResurrectionandHispromises
whichhaveopenedthegatesofParadise
to those who believe and have brought
life to the faithful. Sunday to Sunday,
fromPaschatoPaschaweliveoutourlife
asResurrectionpeopleinthatsamehope
andfaith.IntheHolyLiturgy,thepriest
passesthroughtheRoyalDoorsbetween
theIconoftheIncarnationandtheIcon
ofChristasJudge.Herethenisasymbol
oftheRoyalPriesthoodofbelieversliving
andmovingbetweenthesetwoagesthe
pastandthefuture.Indeedthrough
weshouldbeinaconstantstateofwatch
fulness and preparedness for the end
time. 1 Corinthians 15:2 and 58; More
over,brethren,Ideclaretoyouthegospel
which I preached to you, which also you
receivedandinwhichyoustand,bywhich
also you are saved, if you hold fast that
wordwhichIpreachedtoyouunlessyou
believed in vain Therefore, my beloved
brethren,besteadfast,immovable,always
abounding in the work of the Lord,
knowingthatyourlabourisnotinvainin
theLord.
Our faith like the double headed
eagleofByzantiumlookstotheEastand
theWest,thesacredandtheworld,the
pastandthefuture.Weremainpersistent
and steadfast and yes stubborn; moving
in kairos,immovablein chronos,anchor
ing ourselves to the Apostolic Gospel
traditionamidstthestormsand tidesof
fashion.
OurfaithlikeChristisunchanging
ItisasHeisthesame,yesterday,today,
foreverIndeed,untotheagesofages.

ACRUCIALAND
MIRACULOUSTRAVEL
About10yearshavepassedsinceIlived
inLancaster.Hereisashortaccountof
some events which many may have
experiencedinsomewayoncehavingleft
theirhomeandlookingforanothertrue
oneinafaraway land.Id liketo share
some of the developments of how this
happenedformethen,inthatLancaster
houseofthePatriarchateofAntioch,and
whatithasmeant.
Iwroteasimilararticletopublishin
myhomeparishnewsletterinRussiaand
named it as Orthodoxy in a non
Orthodoxtown.
1.Alien
Youmaythinkmearrogant,butIdidnt
wanttoacceptmyselfasalien.Butalien
environmentwasaroundthatwasthe
point.

Yet,Iliked thecountry.Thefeeling
was not born in the arriving aircraft
lookingdownoutoftheportholewhen
first travelling to Manchester, but,
perhaps,much earlier. Maybe,inschool
studying geography. My friends and
instructors in Russia, of course, had
warnedmeaboutthefirstdifficultmonth
oflivinginafarawayland.However,my
stayinthisbeautifulcountrywithlotsof
greenwasovereightmonths,but,never
theless,Ifeltstillalien.And,almoststray.
Once, I had to have a short walk
through the university campus, when I
mettwostudentstalkinginmylanguage.
TheyinvitedmetojoinaregularRussian
speaking club of the Uni. I came there,
butoddlyenough,Ididntfeelathomein
that place. And, the club members are
definitelynottoblameforthis.Iseemed
to be in my boat, yet, I doubted it.
Nothingchanged,andIwasstilljustan
alien.
Inacoupleofmonths,Iwalkedthe
same way to the centre of the campus.
Goingbyanewsboard,myeyessuddenly
rushed to it, though I tended to ignore
those with cheap attractions for the
comingweekends,stufftosellorrooms
torent.ButatthatmomentIwaslooking
in astonishment at the announcement
with the Russian Orthodox cross on it.
Muchwaterhasgoneunderbridgessince
thenbutIstillseeitveryclearly.Itsaid
aboutregular services onSaturdaysand
invitedeverybodywhowaslookingforan
Orthodoxshelteroncetheyhappenedto
befarfromtheirowncountry.
Thatsit!Whateverthathadseemed
alienbeforewasnolongerthatwaynow.
Nodoubt,IfoundwhatwasmissingandI
waslookingforinvainformonths.
Thosethreeorfourdaysbeforethe
Saturdayserviceweremucheasiertolive.
I surely had no idea then that more
services(ifnotmostorevenallofthem
tillmydeparture)followed.

2.Therightplace!
Sadly,buttherewasnoownbuildingfor
OrthodoxparishionersresidinginLanca
ster.Itmadeusevenwondertakinginto
accounttheenormousnumberofstuden
ts from traditionally Orthodox countries
studyingattheLancasterUniversity.The
issueremainedtoberesolved.
ThoughtheR.C.WingoftheReligi
ousCentreintheUniversity campus,as
the place for Orthodox services, could
look somewhat unusual for most new
people,Idaresay,itwasnotanobstru
ctionforthematall.AsIcameforthe
first liturgy, of course, I already had a
certainideaofwhatanOrthodoxchurch
wassupposedtolooklike.However,ev
erythingaroundquicklybecamefriendly
and welcoming. In no time during the
service, I surely felt I was in the right
place. This is an absolutely precious
feeling!
It was my first experience as an
Orthodox priest was a pater for the
Greek, batyushka for the Russian,
father for the English, etc. There were
someotherthingsthatremindedIwasa
newcomer but nothing could influence
my confidence that the former alien
worldaroundwasgone.Forgood.
Then, quite a common part of the
servicecame,andthatcongregationwas
surelyusedtowhathappenednext,but
notme(kind reminder: I witnessed the
liturgy intheCentreforthefirsttime).
FatherJonathanwouldblessarepresen
tativeofeachcountrypresenttoreadthe
LordsPrayerintheirmothertongueafter
the choir had sung it in English. I am
positive most parishioners, and not
necessarily nonEnglish ones, remember
this moment at their first liturgy there.
Me?Perhaps,Ibegantoacquirethena
verygoodandpiercingunderstandingof
what global Orthodoxy meant. People
were rather gushing than reading no
wonder,theyhadspokeninthatlangu

agetheirfirstwordsintheirlives!Now,it
waslikeanoceanoflanguageswithinthe
Lords Prayer. I felt so much overwhel
med that I didnt notice I was on the
vergeoftears
Perhaps,Itoooftensayforthefirst
time.ThisiswhatImean,since,actually,
I had not walked up the path of due
understanding of what was going on
during church services. Once later on,
therewasatalkbetweenourparishioners
aboutunderstanding,bytheway.Then,
our Greek and Cypriot friends revealed
that they understood church services in
theirhomecountrieswithsomedifficulty,
ifcomparedtowhattheyunderstoodat
theUniservicesbeinginEnglish,dueto
thedifferencebetweentheirpresentday
languageandoldGreektheservicesare
held in. In Russia, we have the same
problemthoughitdoesnotseemsobig.
Thatis,inmycountrywecanunderstand
an Orthodox service better but, at the
sametime,Iamashamednottobeable
tounderstanditevenmore...
And, still, this is always the right
place!
3.My,andonlymytravel
It is rather the hugest possible travel,
which, in my case, apparently began at
Lancaster. But it is huge in technical
termsonly,iftechnicalityisrelevantasa
wordhere.Sure,therewasmyfirstcom
muniontotakeandIstartedthiseternal
and often stumbling climb in learning
Orthodoxy ever endless to comprehend,
whilethedoortoOrthodoxybegantobe
just slightly opening but the abundant
light already comes through to fill with
inconceivableGodsdoings.
Therearenotwotravelsalike.Mine
has been, perhaps, overly controversial,
especially atthebeginningwithhunting
thetruthandgoingastray,andthen,out
oftheblue,wentthroughLancaster.But
forthefirstpartoftheway,couldwebe

abletogettothesecondandfinalparts
ofitandeventuallytothedestination?
MiraculousareYourdeeds,ohLord!
Youmovedadeepcontinentaldwellerto
the NorthWest of Britain not only to
eliminatemynastyalienfeelingsbutalso
tohelpmefindthesenseoflifealthough
theremightseemnomeaning!
ItisthankstoHiswilland,whatis
seen on thesurface, to Lancaster thatI
cannotimaginemylifenowadayswithout
daily reading or hearing the Word, as
wellassacredprocessions(or,aswecall
them Cross processions) through the
town streets, watching others dive at
Epiphanyintoacrossshapedholeinlake
and river ice at 20 oC or whatever
temperature below zero, children
Orthodox camp every summer at the
church,andsoonandsoforth.Itdoesnt
matter that due to circumstances I am
unabletoparticipateintheseeventsin
person. It has become part of my life
filling it with significance but, whats
more,itispartofthemiraculoustravel
Hedesignated.

thereforuseverytime!AlsoIremember

atmosphereamongstus.
That warmth of our meetings has
stayed with me all these years and I'm
delighted to be reading the newsletter

father'sreposeintheLord.Pleaseremem

Mydad'snameisMitriCoutya(1919
2009);MitriisanarabisationofDimitri.
He studied theology under Lossky (BA);
his thesis was The confessor and the
theology of repenting. He left Tripoli,
Lebanon, to settle in Lattaqia for a few
years. Then in 1963 when Metropolitan
Corban(amusicstudentofmydad)took
overTripoliheinvitedhimbacktolivein
Tripoli,workinitsschools,teachtheolo
gyandByzantinemusic.Heremainedthe
protopsaltisthereuntilhisreposein2009.
Hewasoneofthemaincontributorsof
therenaissanceofAntiochthroughallhis
workintheOrthodoxYouthMovement.
