Ford's Technical Advisory Bulletin addresses front seal blowout issues that can occur in C-3 transmissions, similar to problems in THM 700-R4 transmissions. The correction involves checking converter housing bushing to hub clearance, applying Loctite to the front seal, and potentially modifying the converter housing drain back passage. Modifying the drain back passage helps relieve excess oil pressure between the front seal and housing bushing by cutting a "V" shape in the shorter wall of the "bathtub" cavity to improve oil flow past this area.

SUBJECT: FRONT SEAL BLOWOUT
C-3 transmissions can have problems with front seal blow out, just like the THM 700-R4. Not only is the problem the same, but the correction for front seal blow out on a C-3 is similar to the modifications made on the THM 700-R4. First, check converter housing bushing to converter hub clearance. Clearance should range from . 00}~ to .005. Then use stud and bearing mount Loctite on the front seal to hold the seal in the converter housing. Remember to remove the paint from the outer surface of the front seal before applying Loctite7m. Coat both the front seal and converter housing.

MODIFY THE DRAINBACK PASSAGE
Like the THM 700-R4, the C-3 can blow the front seal out of the converter housing because of excess oil pressure between the front seal and converter housing bushing. To help relieve this excess pressure, it.may be necessary to modify the converter housing dram back passage if there is a bathtub cavity (see below) on the back of the converter housing. Upon close inspection of this bathtub you will notice one wall is lower than the rest of the llbathtub,ll This is where all front seal drainback oil must flow. However, the gap in the bathtub~s wall provides for only a .060 bleed orifice. To unprove the flow of oil past this area take a file and cut a ~~v!l into the shorter bathtub wall. When finished, the bottom of the llv1l should be near the bottom of the ~lbathtub.l Regardless of the type of drainback passage used on a C-3 transmission, the passage should always be free of restrictions.
