2nd Grade Unit on Play at Friends Select School

Goal
Play can encompass many different activities (social play, manipulative play,
imaginative play, structured play) and it may mean different things to
different people.
Standards (and Assessment Anchors, if applicable)
W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from
provided sources to answer a question.
SL.2.1 Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners
about grade 2 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger
groups.
Materials and preparation
Example of a completed KWL chart
Large space on the whiteboard and dry erase marker
Want to Know paper for each group and pencils
Name cards to choose groups randomly
Clear tables and space in the hallway for children to work
Learning environment and management issues

In order to remove bias and to avoid exclusive groups, I will use Name
Cards to choose student groups. Since the hallway is a popular place to
work, the first two groups I create will be able to work in the hallway while
the remaining groups will work in the classroom.
Supplies will be set out on a table for students to pick up as they are
dismissed to group work
Lead teacher, assistant teacher, and student teacher will be able to
monitor the groups of students in the hallway and in the classroom to
make sure groups are staying focused and productive

Plan

For the next two weeks, we are going to be doing a unit of Play. Now,
play can mean a lot of different things. What do you think I mean by
Play?
o Students may suggest playing sports, games,
instruments, learning games, etc.
o Read Childrens Dictionary definition of play
o May need to give examples of outdoor play, indoor play,
putting on a play (like we did in mid-March), word play,

Introduce some of the unit-long understanding goals and transition to
the KWL chart

Introduce KWL chart and what each column stands for
Ask students, What do we already know about play?
o Fill in at least 5 or 6 points in the Know column
Now Im going to break you up into groups. With your group, youre
going to fill out the Want to Know column with as many questions as
you can come up with. Then were going to come back together as a
group and youre going to share your questions with everyone so we
can hear each others questions.
Announce groups, students transition to group work, monitor student
progress

Give each group the opportunity to share their questions with the
group
Write the questions on the board as students read them, and point out
any questions that groups have in common
Our goal over the next two weeks is to answer as many of these
questions as possible.
Have students line up for Science class
Assessment of the goals/objectives listed above
Did students share information that they know about play?
Did students work together as a group to fill out the Want to know
column
o Collect Want to know ideas
o Keep students-constructed KWL charts to refer back to later on in
the unit
Anticipating students responses and your possible responses
Students may struggle with KWL chart if they have never filled one out
before fill out the Know column as a class
Students may be upset if another group came up with the same question
as they did - remind students to react in their heads and that having the
same questions is actually a good thing because it means that is a really
important question
o What does it mean if more than one group came up with this
question? What if no one came up with questions? How would
we know what to investigate?

Accommodations for students who may find the material too challenging

o Put sentence starters on the board, such as How, What, Why, etc.
Example of a completed KWL chart will serve as a scaffold for visual
learners who may need to see an example.
Partner struggling writers (1 student in particular) with students who
can write well.
Accommodations for students who may need greater challenge and/or
finish early
o Give them the option of adding more points to the Know column, or
have blank brainstorming graphic organizers that they could try to
organize their thoughts in
