STAGE 2 DANCE

ASSESSMENT TYPE 2: RESPONSE


Part 2: Contemporary Issues
Purpose
To present a clear and logical response to research, analysis, observation and evaluation of a
topic in recent or current contemporary dance history. For the purposes of this assessment,

contemporary refers to a period within the past 25 years. (1990 2015)


Description of Assessment
In Response: Part 2: Contemporary issues, students study dance in a contemporary

period, across local, national, or global settings, or including different cultural


perspectives. (SACE subject outline 2015.) Students should devise a research
question that allows depth of discussion of a contemporary issue in dance.
Students should choose an essay topic that allows them to develop a structured essay
response by:

developing a logical progression of information and ideas

referring to dance works where appropriate

ideas

using references (from video, textbook and interne, live performance) to justify your
integrating quotations into your writing where appropriate.

Example Questions:
Question 1:
Discuss, with reference to live work as well as research, the choreographic approach of
Steven Page and the Philisophical approach of Bangarra Dance Theatre under his direction.

Question 2:
Give an evaluation of the place Bangarra Dance Theatre holds in the Australian dance
industry.Include a discussion of the philosophy of the company, as well as the impact of the
company on dance both in Australia and overseas.

Assessment conditions
A written response of a maximum of 1000 words. A bibliography must be included with
textbook and website references. A minimum of three sources are to be used.

To demonstrate evidence of your learning in this task you should aim to:

nationally, or globally
demonstrate highly developed use of language and terminology relevant to the dance
context
show sophisticated, coherent, and sustained communication to exchange wellinformed ideas and opinions
exhibit in-depth research into, and analysis and interpretation of historical dance
works, practice, and issues in context, using a variety of sources
