STEEL SHEET PILING

WHAT IS STEEL SHEET PILING?

Pile pressed from steel with a vertical
interlocking system
Used to create continuous wall in
most cases to retain soil or water
Can be permanent or temporary
structures
Mostly used in deep excavations, and
during construction of bulkheads,
piers, locks, cofferdams, basements
and foundations

ADVANTAGES OF SHEET PILING

Earth and water resistant
Environmentally friendly made from recycled material and can
be reused because it doesnt lose its shape
Durable and long-lasting
Easy to find, obtain and transport

METHODS OF MANUFACTURING
Hot Rolled Sheet Piling
Steel is rolled at high temperature - usually over 1700 - above steels
recrystallization temperature
Steel easily shaped and formed with this method
Often less expensive then cold formed sheet piling
Less control with size because steel slightly shrinks once cools

CONTINUED
Cold Formed Sheet Piling

Steel sheet is worked at room temperature into usable products

Stamped, rolled or pressed into shape
Produces product capable of having variety of surface finishes
Higher tolerance, concentricity and straightness opposed to hot rolled

STEEL SHEET PILING SHAPES

Hat- Shape
U- Shape
Z- Shape

HAT-SHAPED STEEL SHEET PILE

Uses large section of thin wall that is hat-shaped
Most effectively used for retaining walls in narrow urban areas,
areas with weak ground, and construction to protect deep water
piers and banks
Used in civil engineering and to prevent ground subsidence
Efficiently driven in due to more rigid design

U-SHAPED STEEL SHEET PILE

Shape looks like letter U made up of web with two flanges
Remains popular choice - widely known and used around the world
Sufficient for temporary uses and structures
Available in wide variety of sizes

Z-SHAPED STEEL SHEET PILE

Shape looks like letter Z stretched horizontally made up of a web
connected to two flanges with parallel outer faces
Interlocks are symmetrically located and formed on the piles
exterior elements
Increased strength-to-weight ratio
Most popular sheet piling after introduction in U.S. in 40s
