Question 4: Who would be the audience for

your media product?

NRS Social Grade
The NRS demographic grade is way of profiling the audience by grouping
them into 6 groups according to the income they receive. It was developed
for use on the NRS, and for over 50 years NRS has been the research
industrys source of social grade data. The classifications are as follows:

Our film will target audiences from the groups, C1, C2, D and E. The
reason we believe our film will be best suited to these groups is because
our film is filmed in east London estate which may make it easier for those
in lower class and working class to feel a connection between themselves
and the actors as the actors are from the same group.
Level of education
We believe that people who watch our film would not need to have a high
level of education, maybe GCSE's at the minimum. However our film may
attract those with higher education qualification, as psychologists may be
drawn to watching our film as it is a psychological thriller/horror.
Social Class

Socio-economic status is a method used by industries/businesses to find

the right economic class audience for their target audience. For example,
we traditionally have 3 classes, which consist of the upper class, middle
class and working class. People in the upper class are wealthy, those in
the middle class fall in between the upper and working class, and working
class people are those with low paying jobs. We believe that most of our
audience will consist of working class people as they will be able to easily
adapt to the role of the working class characters within our film, and also
be able to feel more sympathy towards them.
Ethnicity
In 2012, Tower Hamlets held a population of around 263,000 residents.
Out of the 263,000 residents, almost 30% of them consisted of the
Asian/Asian British ethnic minority. We believe our film will have would
attract audiences from various different backgrounds. However our film
may attract larger number of people from a white British and Asian/Asian
British background in Tower Hamlets, as percentage of people from these
two backgrounds are highest percentage of people in Tower Hamlets and
the actors themselves are from Tower Hamlets so the audience may be
able to relate. Also it is very uncommon to see someone from an Asian
background to play the main role in a thriller film so many people from
different backgrounds may be intrigued by this idea.
Characterisation
Young and Rubicam developed a theory. It looked at the brands people
purchased/used and how these people thought about them. It helped to
understand the positive and negative aspects of these brands. Maslows
Hierarchy of Needs was useful. They centered their ideas around this, such
as physiological, safety and esteem based needs. As different countries
had different influences due to cultural backgrounds, they removed the
specific effect of the Hierarchy and so named the theory Cross Cultural
Consumer Characterisation which is shortened to 4Cs. One advantage to
using this categorisation is that there is more variety within groups;
however some people may have more than one personality, therefore
making the groups overlap.
