are answers to some questions
you may have about your

Affordable
education

Quest International University Perak (QIUP) believes that good education

should be made available to individuals of all backgrounds.

OOD education usually

comes with a hefty
price tag, but Quest
International University Perak
(QIUP) is determined to change
that. The creators of QIUP are
firm in their belief that good
education should be made
available to all and not just the
privileged few.
Therefore, QIUP is aimed
at helping all levels of society
to benefit from and excel in
education regardless of their
financial background.
Expensive school fees will
deter many from reaching
their full potential as they
concentrate instead on just
getting by.
At QIUP, courses are made
affordable for the average
family without compromising
on quality.
QIUP offers scholarships
to students with excellent
academic results in their SPM
and STPM examinations to
pursue programmes at the
university. These scholarships
are aimed at helping students
pay the tuition fee and assisting
them in achieving their
educational goals.
Many students have
benefited from these
scholarships and are now
pursuing their studies at the
university.
Understanding that students
have various financial needs,
QIUP has worked with many
education loan and scholarship
providers to ensure students
get the best in terms of fulfilling
their educational and financial
needs.
Some of the loans available
to QIUP students are PTPTN,
Lions Group, MARA, Pinjaman
Pendidikan Negeri Perak and
Pinjaman Pendidikan Negeri
Selangor. The applications for
these loans are facilitated by
QIUP itself.
Other financial aid available
for students comes from
Maju Institute of Educational
Development, Perkeso, Kojadi,
Yayasan Perak, Yayasan Sabah,
Yayasan Sarawak, KWSP,
Yayasan Kemajuan Islam
Nasional (YAKIN), SUK Selangor
and various bank loans.
Many people think that
scholarships are only for
the poor and needy. In fact,
this financial aid paves the
way for individuals from any
background to achieve their
dreams and ambitions.

As a lot of financial aid is

now made available, more and
more students are realising
that these are avenues they can
take advantage of to achieve
success not only in their
studies, but more importantly,
in their prospective careers.
There are three faculties and
one centre at QIUP Centre for
Foundation Studies, Faculty of
Medicine, Faculty of Integrative
Sciences & Technology, and
Faculty of Business and
Management & Social Sciences.
The programmes offered are
at the foundation, diploma,

The funds will be disbursed in the

Principal and deputy chief executive
officer of ATC Dr Danny Choong says that
the practice of offering scholarships to
deserving students is not new at ATC.
We have been giving bright students
scholarships for many years. This being
our 28th year in service to students, we

Malaysian public who have helped make us
the largest private law school in the region,
says Choong.
To qualify for the scholarship, students
will have to register with ATC for any one

Besides being a pioneer and leader in
private legal education in Malaysia, the
college has embarked on collaborations
with leading business course providers in
the United Kingdom to provide Malaysians
with an excellent option to obtain businessrelated qualifications coupled with the
necessary industrial experience.
ATC offers the Bachelors (Hons)

For 10 weeks each semester, Taylors Business School students assist the Deaf-in-Business staff in operating the business, giving the
students the opportunity to put the theories of business management and finance into practice.

HE relationship between
developed and emerging
economies, global
institutions and nations on
one hand and public and
private sectors on the other
has evolved, which has led
to a greater understanding
of the connection between
and the interdependency of
business and society.
As a result, the role of
business has changed.
Seventy three percent of

companies that are perceived
to deliver on corporate social
responsibility.
It is now widely accepted
that businesses have to do
more than just make a profit.
They must also drive social
and environmental change.
A 2013 Jobstreet Malaysia

Successful applicants will
also be enrolled in the SHINE

Rewarding musical talents

J

EFFREY Cheah Foundation (JCF)

owns and governs Sunway
Education Group and its entities,
including Sunway University and
Sunway College.
Founded by Tan Sri Dr Jeffrey
Cheah, chairman of the Sunway
Group, it aims to give back to
society by providing quality
education to all deserving
Malaysians.
More than RM720mil has been
chanelled into the foundation and
since 1997, more than RM165mil in
scholarships have benefited more
than 20,000 students.
Joy Tan Yi Xin and Bernadine
Kwan Wan Ling are among the
scholars who have benefited from
the JCFs Sunway Music Talent
Scholarship. The scholarship covers
50% of their tuition fees.
Tan is currently in her second
year of the Association of Chartered
Certified Accountants (ACCA)
programme in Sunway College.
She is also a musician who began
learning music at the age of four.
She plays the piano (ABRSM grade
7), clarinet (ABRSM grade 5), organ
(Yamaha Electone level 8), ukulele
and violin.
Despite the intense ACCA
programme, Tan remains active in
music. She was part of the Seafield
School Band and has been an
active member of the Petaling Jaya
Philharmonic Orchestra since 2009.
Since joining the Sunway
University Ensemble at the start
of her ACCA programme, her
exposure has widened through
various performing opportunities
at Sunway University and Sunway
Pyramid Convention Centre. She is
currently the president of Ensemble.
The ACCA is challenging
but everything we learn in the
programme is fundamental to a
professional accountant, says Tan.

IF youre reading books and papers
and then have to re-read them
because youre not sure if youve
picked up everything you need,
then here are some tips to help you
read more efficiently.

Know your purpose

IF you are new to a field and
you have no particular subject,
then read the whole thing, take a
break so it all filters through, and
read it again so that you squeeze
everything you can out of it.
However, if youre reading a book
about World War II but you only
need to learn about Japanese tactics
for a history assignment, then you
can ignore the areas that deal with

It prepares us with capabilities to

handle various accounting tasks.
For example, the F8 Audit and
Assurance paper teaches us the
5Ws (when, where, how, what, why)
that can be used in the assurance
engagement process in the context
of the professional regulatory
framework. This is also where I
discovered my interest in becoming
an auditor.
On the other hand, Kwan has
recently started her American
Degree Transfer Program (ADTP) at
Sunway University. She majors in
forensic psychology and expects to
transfer to the United States next
year.
Kwan was introduced to the
violin at the age of six and started
learning the double bass four years
ago. She will be taking the Trinity
ATCL Performance Diploma, which
is equivalent in standard to the first
year of an undergraduate degree,
for both violin and double bass this
year.
Kwan, who recently joined the
Sunway University Ensemble, is
a double bassist in the Malaysian
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
and has participated in various
national-level competitions such
as the Malaysian Youth Orchestra
Foundation, Anzca Music Festival
and the Kota Kinabalu Music
Festival.
She has also participated
in an international level violin
competition in Taiwan, in which she
qualified as a finalist.
She was attracted to Sunway
University for its reputation as a
leading private university.
I am enjoying the ADTP at
Sunway so far. I chose ADTP
because it allows me to spend time
with my family in Malaysia for a
couple of years while pursuing
an American education before I

go abroad to experience life in

America. I plan to minor in music
performance when I transfer
there, says Kwan.
Both Tan and Kwan are grateful
to be offered the scholarships at
Sunway as it helps not only in
reducing their financial burden
but also boosts their confidence in
music.
The scholarships stringent
selection process requires
applicants to submit a video
demonstrating their music skills,
partake in a live audition and
attend an interview.
I played two of my best music
pieces to impress the judges and I
still remember being tongue-tied
during the interview, says Kwan.
Successful recipients are
required to join the Sunway
Ensemble to further hone and
grow their music talents.
The ensembles experience has
been pleasant for both Tan and
Kwan.
Music would sound imperfect
if some instruments were
missing, says Tan regarding the
importance of teamwork. Every
moment spent with the ensemble
has been memorable and I enjoy
every minute practising and
performing together with them.
The Jeffrey Cheah Foundation
and Sunway Education Group
value outstanding and deserving
students.
The JCFs scholarships provide
financial assistance not only for
music talents, but also for those
who excel in sports and have
achieved academic merit.

Reading smart
the war in Europe, Africa and the
Middle East and focus purely on the
South-East Asian parts.

Be an active reader
By interacting with the work,
youll boost your memory. So, if
you have a photocopied or printed
academic paper, use a highlighter
to mark the important information.
If its a book, and its yours, go to it.
(You can always buy a pristine copy
later with your first pay cheque if
you really want to.) If youre reading
online, it is even easier: use the
highlighter to mark the text and
then paste it into a new document,

summarise it, paraphrase it and

you should be good to go.

Take lots of breaks

Reading and learning at the
same time is tiring so learn what
your limits are. If you pause and
cant remember what you have
just read, go back to the bit you do
remember and take a short break.
A short walk while thinking over
what youve just read will help fix
the material in your mind.
It will also help you identify
parts that you havent quite
grasped and need to look over
again.

Monash University Malaysia

This means that through
our programmes, we prepare

of society and ultimately become
future leaders.
We dont see ourselves as a
campus thats just transporting
programmes from Australia. Our
courses are contextualised for the
country and the region to ensure
they are locally relevant while also
carrying a global perspective.
One of the research facilities
housed by the campus is the
South-East Asian Community
Observatory, a cross-disciplinary
and multi-institutional
collaboration that is piloting
a study in the southern part
of Peninsular Malaysia on
community health.
Another research facility in
the campus is the Brain Research
Institute Malaysia (BRIMS), which
partners with the Prime Ministers
department to focus on medicinal

and aromatic plants to fight brain

diseases and fishes to accelerate
the Malaysian aquaculture
industry.
The campus is also gaining
ground in research in the areas
of green electronics and the halal
ecosystem.
Students have access to more
than 420,000 electronic books,
85,000 print and electronic
journals, and 1,100 networked
electronic databases as well as
