LOCAL PEOPLE SURVEY

health, income, education
No. English
1

Are there any inconveniences in the local area

after the mining activity started?

Bahasa Indonesia
Apakah ada ketidaknyamanan di
area setempat selama kegiatan
pertambangan telah berlangsung?

A: (Pak Nandi) Well, the benefits of mining

activities certainly only applies individually.
However, the inconveniences are experienced as
a community, because, for example, the natural
environment is damaged. Reclamation efforts are
also not enough to restore what was naturally
already there. There are also some cases where
there is not even any reclamation activities after
the mining was already done.
2

Have the economy in the local area improved

after the mining company was established?
A: (Ibu Eslia) Yes, you can say that it improved
as if the miners are really having a successful day
of income, they can get at least a million rupiah.

Can you make an adequate living from your

income?
A: (Pak Nandi) The income is quite high. In fact,
it can sometimes be more than enough.
A: (Ibu Eslia) Speaking generally: yes, miners
get a pretty high income which provides us with
adequate living.

Apakah ada kemajuan dalam

ekonomi setelah perusahaan
dalam bidang pertambangan
diresmikan?

Dapatkah Anda membuat hidup

yang mencukupi dengan
penghasilan Anda?

Did your health get affected by the mining

activity? (If not: do you know anyone whose
health was affected by the mining activities?)
How often do people get sick because of it?

Apakah kesehatan Anda

terdampak buruk oleh kegiatan
pertambangan? (Jika tidak:
apakah Anda kenal seorang yang
terdampak buruk oleh kegiatan
pertambangan?)

A: (Pak Nandi) There are side effects to wellBerapa sering penduduk terkena
being from mining activities. Our backs and
penyakit karena hal tersebut?
waists suffer the most because a major part of our
job is to carry heavy loads like stones.
A: (Ibu Eslia) So far no, I have not known any
diseases that were caused from mining activities.
However, if there are, then I guess that we cant
really see the effects just yet; perhaps we will a
few years into the future.
5

What do you do for a living if you aren't a miner? Apakah pekerjaan Anda jika
bukan seorang penambang?
A: (Pak Nandi) If you aren't a miner, there
are still some more job opportunities, like
what he is doing now (driver).

What is your personal opinion on mining?

Apakah pendapat Anda mengenai

pertambangan?

A: (Pak Nandi) There are some who follow the

correct procedures, while there are also some
others who do not. I also feel that most people
know the consequences of mining, but they still
do it anyway. My advice for the government is to
just eradicate all mining activities and areas.
A: (Ibu Eslia) I think that the government can try
to rehabilitate the damaged grounds.
HOSPITAL SURVEY
life expectancy, diseases, infant mortality
No. English
1

Bahasa Indonesia

What is the life expectancy of the local people? Has it Berapakah AHH (angka
dropped or risen through the years?
harapan hidup) penduduk
lokal? Apakah angka tersebut
A: The data that the hospital received from the
menurun atau meningkat
government's survey showed that the life expectancy pada tahun-tahun belakangan
of the local people in Bangka was quite high. The life ini?
expectancy for the Bangka-Belitung people was at
least to 75 years old. The target for 2010-2015 has no

significant increases or decreases since Bangka still

holds one of the best ranks for a great life expectancy
in fact, the second best in Indonesia. This
information was based on the research that had been
going on for five years, hence the data cluster from
2010-2015.
2

What are the most common diseases that the local

people have gotten?

Penyakit apakah yang paling

sering didapatkan penduduk?

A: Bangka can be called as an area of endemic

malaria. Malaria has been a major disease since 1970
to 1990. Bangka joined in a malaria (prevention)
program in 2008, and at that time, it was still noted
that there would at least be 200 malaria patients per
month. However, after joining the governments
program to eliminate the high risk of malaria, there
was a drastic decrease to the number of patients who
were infected with malaria. For the 7 years that the
province has joined the program, the results led to a
mere number of at the very least 2 patients per month
(in fact, in March 2015, there has been no noted
malaria patients). Another common disease would be
dengue fever. Although both diseases are brought
upon us by mosquitoes, the breeding places are very
different. The mosquitoes who bring malaria are most
often found in mining areas, whereas mosquitoes who
bring dengue fever live in houses. One other common
disease would be the accidents in mining activities,
where people would buried in the ground/dirt. The
conventional mining would be done by the
government, but the unconventional mining by the
locals present a greater risk.
3

Do the mining sites and activities present a problem

to the health of the local people?
A: The problem that the mining activities usually
presents is the destruction of the environment which
affects the lifestyle of the local people. Forests are
usually cut down, and the chemicals that are used to
form the minerals affect the rivers. As the waters are
now dirtier, it affects the balance of the ecosystem
negatively. Back then, there would still be enough
water for the people even during the hottest peak of
summer, but nowadays, water is thinning along with
the increasing population. Reclamation takes a long
time, and the local people are inconvenienced since
they cannot use the soil to plant their crops because
the chemicals have already affected it.

Apakah situs dan aktivitas

pertambangan membawa
masalah bagi kesehatan
penduduk sekitar?

SUB-DISTRICT SURVEY
life expectancy, infant mortality, rules and regulations
No. English
1

What diseases are commonly caused by

mining activities?

Bahasa Indonesia
Penyakit apa yang disebabkan oleh
aktivitas pertambangan?

A: There are cases of skin cancer because

their skin is exposed too much to the sun
when working. There are no specific
diseases but they often get injured during
their mining activity. This cause them to
go to the hospital often to get their
injuries fixed.
2

What are the factors that affect the deaths

of the local people?

Faktor apa saja yang mempengaruhi

kematian penduduk sekitar?

A: A few local people died because of

working in the mining site. These few
people died because of the injuries. Some
injuries are not major problems but there
are some injuries that could kill the
workers. The local people who does not
work in the mining site did not really get
affected until they die.
3

Do you see the mining as beneficial to the

economy, social, and environment? What
do you think is the most beneficial factor
of the mining?

Apakah Anda melihat pertambangan

sebagai manfaat bagi ekonomi, sosial,
dan lingkungan? Menurut Anda, faktor
apakah yang paling
bermanfaat/menguntungkan?

A: Most local people consider mining

beneficial to their economy. It certainly is
not beneficial for the environment but it is
for their economy. Tin became one of the
most important things in their life because
that is their work. It became their spine
for their economy because they get paid
well to work there.
4

What are the disadvantages of mining?

A: The environment gets destroyed.
Bangkas culture is to focus on one work.
This one work is mining. So many people
are too focused on mining that they forgot
their actually destroying the environment.

Apa saja kelemahan dari pertambangan?

The climate became too hot for crops to

grow so many farmers neglect their farm
and work at the mining company. In the
previous years Bangka was never too dry
for water but recently the local people
said the water is disappearing.
