Estimating Sums and Differences of Mixed Numbers

Grade: 5
Time Allotment: 1 class period
Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
Ask students when there might be a time that they would estimate
sums and differences of fractions. Students will then write down all of
their thoughts and place their post-it note on the graffiti wall
(chalkboard). Together, we will read through some of their ideas and
discuss.
Instructional Materials:
Topic 10 Adding and Subtracting Mixed Numbers Book
Math Books
Quick Questions Game
I Have, Who Has Game Cards
Standards/Objectives:
Common Core:
5. NF. Use equivalent fractions as a strategy to add and subtract
fractions.
Objectives:
Use benchmark fractions and number sense of fractions to
estimate mentally and assess the reasonableness of answers.
Teaching/Activities:
Warm-up Play I Have, Who Has.
Begin by stating that sometimes it isnt always necessary to find
an exact answer when computing fractions.
A problem will be written on the board in which students will
individually work through. They will share their results with the
person to their right.
Then, together, we will solve the problem. First, I will write a
number line on the board and have students write their own
number line in their Math Journals. Then, we will work through the
problem together while asking them questions.
They will then solve two problems individually and then share
their results with the person to their left. They will compare
answers and discuss accordingly. Then, we will discuss the
correct answers together.

Students will then be asked to turn in their math books to page

254. Then, I will have them name some of the different ways they
can estimate.
We will look at the problem presented in the book and walk
through solving the problem as a whole group using the
interactive program on the computer.
We will try a few problems together from page 254. Students will
use their white boards. When students have completed a
problem, they will raise their boards and I will check their
answers. If it is incorrect, I will help them to correct their answer
and check for understanding.
Then, students will complete the Quick Check Master. As they
finish, I will walk around and check their answers. If I collect their
papers, then we will meet together to review the concepts, again.
The others will work in their math centers.
At this time, students who are in my group will review the
questions on the quick check, as well as do a few extra problems.
I will also ask them for any questions and confusions.
Students will then come back together and complete Practice 102 worksheet.
