rubellahavegreatlydecreasedthechanceofpassingthevirustotheirunbornornewborn
children,eliminatingthebirthdefectsassociatedwiththedisease.
Vaccinessavethegovernmentsmillionsofdollars.TheCDCestimatesthatchildren
vaccinatedbetween1994and2014haveyieldednetsavingsof$1.38trillionin"societalcosts,"
includingmoneysavedbypreventinglostproductivityduetodisabilityandearlydeath.The
UnitedStatessavesabout$27per$1investedinDTaPvaccination,and$13per$1spenton
MMRvaccination.UNICEFestimatesthat$6.2billioncouldbesavedintreatmentcostsif
vaccinesweremorecommonintheworldspoorestcountries.AccordingtotheInternational
VaccineAccessCenteratJohnsHopkinsBloombergSchoolofPublicHealth,$62.9billion
couldbesavedbyprovidingHib,pneumococcal,androtavirusvaccinationstothe73poorest
countries:$1.4billionintreatmentcosts,$300millioninlostcaretakerwages,$6.2billionin
lifetimeproductivitylossduetodisability,and$55billioninlifetimeproductivitylossbecause
ofdeath.Themorepeoplethataresaved,themoremoneythatthecountriessave,wearesaving
millionsofdollarsjustbecausepeoplearegettingyearlyshotssotheycantgetsickaseasily.
ManyvaccinepreventablediseasesarestillintheUnitedStates.Althoughtheparalytic
formofpoliohasmostlydisappearedthankstovaccination,thevirusstillexistsincountrieslike
Pakistanwheretherewere93casesin2013and71in2014.Thepolioviruscanbeincubatedby
apersonwithoutsymptomsforyearsandthenthatpersoncanthenaccidentallyinfectan
unvaccinatedpersonthattheviruscanmutateintoitsparalyticformandspreadamongst
unvaccinatedpeople.UnvaccinatedAmishmissionarieswhotraveledtothePhilippinesbrought
measlesbacktoOhioinMay2014,resultingin155infectedpeopleasofJune5,2014.

AccordingtotheCDC,allvaccinescarryariskofalifethreateningallergicreaction
(anaphylaxis)inaboutonepermillionchildren.Butmosthavepeopledontevengetareaction,

effectofvaccinesisasevereallergicreactionthatoccursin"oneperseveralhundredthousandto
onepermillionvaccinations.AndthekilledfluvaccinedoesnotcauseBellspalsy,anditdoes
nottriggerepisodesofasthma.Combinationvaccines,likeMMR(measles,mumps,andrubella),
havebeenusedwithoutadverseeffectssincethemid1940s.
