Verbs

 A verb is a word that expresses action or state of being.


Examples: Juan plays basketball on the court.
Miss Klooster is a teacher in our school.
 There are two types of verbs:
- An action verb is a verb that shows action.
Examples: run, swim, hike
- A linking verb does not show action; it links the subject to a word that
describes or identifies the subject. A verb is linking if it can be
replaced by one of the verbs of being (am, is, are, was, were).
Examples: Edgardo appears scared.
The ball is black and white.
 A sentence may contain a verb phrase with a main and one or more

helping verbs:
- A main verb is the last word of a verb phrase.
- Helping verbs are the other words in a verb phrase.
Helping verbs: forms of be, forms of have, forms of do, can could,
shall, should, will, would, must, might, may
Examples: Pamela was playing her flute.
The photographer is taking the picture.
 Verbs have to agree with their subject:
– Singular subjects must have a singular verb.
Example: The boy lives in Canada. Does he ride a bike?
– Plural subjects must have a plural verb. (You and I must have plural verbs)
Example: The kids live in Canada. Do they ride bikes?

 The tense of a verb tells the time: present, past, or future


– Present tense means something is happening in the present.
– Past tense means something happened in the past. Most end in –d or
-ed
– Future tense means something will happen in the future. Future tense
verbs use will.
 The four principal parts of a verb are present, present participle, past,
and past participle.
– Form the present participle of a regular verb by adding –ing to the
present (or take off the –e and add –ing). Use a helping verb.
– Form the past tense of a regular verb by adding –d or –ed (or change
the –y to –i before adding –ed). Some verbs are irregular in the past.
– Form the past participle of most regular verbs by using a helping verb
have (have, had, has) and the verb in the past tense. Some verbs are
irregular in the past participle.
