HEAT
A girl standing by the seaside during the day and the night can feel a sea breeze and a land
breeze blowing respectively as shown in Diagrams 1.1 and 1.2.

Diagram 1.1
diagram 1.2
The difference in the specific heat capacities of the land and the sea results in the formation of
a sea breeze and a land breeze.
(a) (i) What is meant by specific heat capacity?
[1mark]
(ii) Using Diagrams 1. I and 1.2, compare the directions of the wind with
the time of the day. By relating the temperature of air to the density of
the air, deduce the relevant physics concept involved and explain this
[5marks]
concept.
(iii) Explain briefly how a sea breeze is formed.

Diagram 1.3 shows the simple structure of a refrigerator.

Explain how you would design a refrigerator, with a freezer on top and the chiller room
below. Using Diagram 1.3, draw any additional components required to make it a
workable refrigerator.
In your explanation, emphasise the following aspects:
(i) The cooling effect produced by the evaporation of the coolant,
(ii) The direction of flow of the coolant..
(iii) The temperature control and the efficient use of electrical power by the
refrigerator

WAVE
1 Diagram 1.1 shows a boat using ultrasonic to determine the depth of the ocean. A pulse of
sound waves is emitted from the boat and the echo from the seabed is detected 0.2 s later.
The speed of sound waves in the sea water is 1200 ms-1.

Diagram 1.1
(a)

What type of wave is the sound wave?

..

(b)

Calculate the depth of the sea.

(c)

Diagram 1.2 shows the wave form of the transmitted signal and the
reflected signal. It is noticed that the amplitude of the reflected signal is
lower than that of the transmitted signal.
Give one reason for the observation.
