Instruction
The sum of the two digits in the
product is always equal to 9.

The answer to any single digit number

multiplied by nine always has the sum of nine.
For any number multiplied by nine, one less than the other number is the
tens digit of the answer. The ones digit of the answer is whatever number is
needed for the sum to equal 9.
Subtract one for the first number

For example: 9 X 7= 63
Add these to make 9

Instruction
Using fingers to show nines
multiplication tables

When multiplying a number by nine, hold up all 10 fingers,

count over the number that is being multiplied by nine, and
put that finger down. Now look at the number of fingers on the
left side of the space, that is your tens digit, then count the
number of fingers on the right side, thats the ones digit.

4 X 9=
Count to the fourth finger, fold it
down. You are left with 3 and 6.
The answer is 36.

Practice with your own fingers.

5 X 9=
3 X 9=
8 X 9=

Add to
Known Fact
A Multiplication Strategy
To find 9 X 6, you know that 9 X 5 = 45.
Skip counting by 9 to add one more group of 9
45 + 9 = 54 so 9 X 6 = 54
To find 9 X 7 add two groups of 9 to 45
45 + 9 + 9 = 63, so 9 X 7 = 63
