Assignment 3

1. As shown in Figure, a pipeline that transports petroleum at 40C at a rate of 3 m 3/s

branches out into two parallel pipes A and B made of commercial steel that reconnect
downstream. Pipe A is 600 m long and has a inner diameter of 30 cm while pipe B is
900 m long and has a inner diameter of 45 cm.
Assumptions:
(i) The flow is steady and incompressible.
(ii) Entrance effects are negligible, and thus the flow is fully developed.
(iii)
Minor losses are disregarded.
(iv) Flows through both pipes are turbulent (to be verified).
(v) The head loss in two parallel branches must be the same.
(vi) The total flow rate must the sum of the flow rates in the parallel branches
Properties:
The density and dynamic viscosity of petroleum at 40C are = 776 kg/m3 and
= 0.2188 kg/ms. The roughness of commercial steel pipes is = 0.000055 m.
(a) Determine the flow rate through each of the parallel pipes.
(b) Determine the average velocity V through each of the parallel pipes.
(c) Determine the friction factor f and the Head Loss HL for each of the parallel pipes.
(d) Verify the flows through both pipes whether they are turbulent or laminar.
