Asthma is a condition that affects people's airways, narrowing the bronchial tubes and the bronchioles.

Triggers, such as pollen, cigarette smoke or even colds can start an attack characterized by wheezing,
coughing and shortness of breath due to bronchocontriction or blocking the brochi by mucus. It is an
intermittent disease and can be controlled by medicines.

For a long time people believed that after the attack, the airways come back to normal, but more recent
studies has brought a fresh look: the airways are permanently narrow, during the attack and in between
attack. This long term inflamation is called remodeling.

Remodeling was considered a result of the asthma, but is appears to be a fundamental cause for the
disease. This tends to be a genetic condition, influenced by environment. Studies on asthmatic children
showed the contribution of environment in remodeling. However, this appears even before birth,
environment just increases the sympthomes.

Most of the recent studies show that the causes of asthma were mistaken for results of the condition.
The fresh look into the problem shows that the remodeling is the main cause triggered by
environmental factors.
