Thisunitisappropriateatthistimebecauseitisagoodwayforthestudentstogetfamiliarwith
alternativemediumsforartmaking,whichwillhelpthemfurtherdeveloptheirknowledgeandskills
inVisualArts.Learningthesenewskillswillbeagoodwayforthestudentstodeveloptheircritical
analysisskillsforevaluatingtheirownworkaswellastheworkoftheirpeersandotherartists.
Throughthehandsonactivities,practice,assignmentsanddiscussion,thestudentswillbeableto
exhibitseveraloftheexpectationsthatareintheOntarioCurriculumDocument.

Thefirstassignment,the
CollaborativeMural
,willhelpthemdeveloptheirteamworkskillssince
theymustworkcollaboratively,togenerate,explore,andelaborateonideaswhileovercominga
varietyofcreativechallengesthatcomewithworkinginagroup(A1.1).Itwillbeagoodwayfor
studentstogettoknoweachothersinceallofthestudentsmustworktogether.Thestudentswill
alsohavealotoffreedomofexpressioninthisassignmentandwillbeabletogetupandwalk
aroundastheywork,sothisclassshouldbeprettytherapeuticforthosewhoarefeelingstressed.
Havingtheopendiscussionattheendwillkeeptheclassengagedandawake.

Thesecondassignment,
Juxtapositions
,willintroducestudentstonewtechniquesandterminology,
suchasthewordjuxtapositionwhichwilllikelybenewtothem.Bytheendofthisassignment,
studentsshouldbeabletousethistermcorrectlyandappropriatelywhencreatingoranalysingart
worksinthefuture(C1.1).Thisassignmentwillinterestthelearnersinthattheycanbecreativeand
evenusehumorintheirjuxtapositions.

The
ModernPortrait
assignment,studentswillhavetointegratetechnologyintotheirworksby
photographingselfportraitsandthentheywillmixthedigitalmediawithmoretraditionalmethods
suchaspaintinganddrawing.Thisassignmentwillopenthemuptousingtechnologyintheirart,
breakingthetraditionalcanonofartmaking(A3.2).Thisassignmentisagoodtransitionfromthe
Juxtapositionassignmentbecausestudentswillbejuxtaposingmoderndigitalimageswithtraditional
paintinganddrawingandfurtherexploringthespecificeffectsitcancreate(D1.1).Becausethe
selfportraithastotrulyreflecttheartist,thisassignmentwillhelpdeveloptheirskillsinconveying
emotionandenhancingpersonalexpressionintheirart.Theirfinishedproductshouldexpress
personalfeelingsandcommunicatespecificemotionstoanaudience(A2.1).Havingtoprovidea
rationaleandpresentingtheworktotheclassattheendofthisassignmentcoversarangeof
curriculumexpectations(B1.2,B1.4,C1.2,C1.3)asstudentswillbehavingtoexplaintheircreative
process,deconstructthevisualcontent,andreflectontheeffectivenessoftheirworksaswellasthe
worksofothers,allwhileusingtheappropriateterminology.Whileothersarepresentingtheir
works,studentswillpracticeanalysingtheirinitialresponsetoartworks(B1.1).

The
RecycledMaterialSculpture
willhelpthestudentsexploreissuesofsocialjustice(A2.2).This
assignmentpromotesenvironmentalresponsibility,bringscurrentissuesintoperspectiveandshows
studentshowthosethemescanbedisplayedcreatively.Thisshouldhelpthemdevelopempathyand
themotivationtoexploreactivismandshowthemthatartisapowerfultooltofuelchange.This
assignmentcouldbecrosscurriculartoGeographyinthatitisexploringhumanconsumptionandthe
environment,orevenNativeStudiesbecausethestudentscouldexploretheeffectsofglobalization
andconsumerismonNativecommunities,helpingthestudentsdevelopcriticalliteracy.This
assignmentdoesnotnecessarilyhavetoberelatedtoenvironmentalissueseither.Itismostlyabout
usingarttoinspire,expresstheirtruthandbringaboutchange.Thiscouldreflectanysocialjustice
issue.Thevideoforthislesson,ArtasActivism,addressesawidevarietyofsocialjusticeissues,
includinggayrights.Thisassignmentisacalltoactionwithintenttoconnecttopeopleinanopen,
free,safeandinclusiveenvironment.
