FDI in Insurance
The government needs approval during a parliamentary session ending on December 23 to
allow overseas investors to hold a 49 percent
stake in insurance companies, up from the current 26 percent cap. The law would also raise
the cap for the pension industry. The opposition
has not yet promised support needed to pass
the law in upper house. The industry expects
that raising the cap would result in $2 billion of
Asset Sales
The government plans to raise nearly $9.5 billion
by selling stakes in state-run and private companies including oil explorer ONGC (ONGC.NS) and
Coal India <COAL .NS> by March. Analysts
doubt whether the target will be achieved.
Market valuations are high and Modi seems
determined to overcome labour union opposition
to the Coal India sale, but the government has
started the sell off late in the financial year.

he Constitution is the best book that the Indian society has
ever produced. It is a gospel of human rights. It is indeed
the reflection of aspirations of a multi-cultural, multi-religious and a multi lingual society. It takes into consideration
the diversity of Indian society which no other Indian book can parallel. It is thus the only book that makes India a nation. It is indeed
the only book which every Indian would feel proud to call the
National Scripture of India.
Article 25 of the Indian Constitution makes freedom of conscience and free profession, practice and propagation of religion
a fundamental right guaranteed to all citizens. It makes it very
clear that every citizen has the right to practise or not practise any
religion subject to public order, morality and health and to the
other provisions of this Part. The Indian Constitution guarantees
individual freedom to the fullest.
A person henceforth can practise any religion. He or she can
also practise the teachings of more than one religion. He or she
can practise different religions at different times. A citizen can
also practise and preach non-belief in a civilised manner. If any
individual changes his or her belief system, that is very much con-

A goodwill gesture was seen on 25 December 2014, when Muslims and Sikhs
joined hands to lay foundation-stone of Abu Bakar Masjid in Patiala and prayed
for peace and harmony. There are only 25 Muslim families in Devgarh village
where the foundation-stone of the mosque was laid with the help of thousands
of Sikh people living in the village, projecting religious harmony and national
integrity. This is the only mosque within an area of 59 kilometers from the village.
planning to take strict steps against those who were involved in the planned
erection of a statue of Godse. The ABHM had earlier announced that it would
erect several statues of Godse across the country alongwith one at Meerut. The
administration has been maintaining strict vigil to stop any untoward incident.
Meanwhile, demands have been made to ban the release of ABHMs upcoming
documentary Desh Bhakt Nathuram Godse which is slated to be released on
30 January 2015. On the other hand, MDMK chief Vaiko slammed the ABHM
over its plans to install Godses busts across the country. He urged the Tamil
Nadu government to prevent such glorification of Godse.

Sangh Parivars staple of propaganda

absurd actionsIf the Muslim rulers had
converted people by the sword, would they
have spared Bhagwats forefathers? Eight
hundred years of Muslim rule was long
enough to make India a Muslim country.
That the Bhagwats and Togadias of this
world are around to spew communal
venom proves that the Muslim rulers were
not obsessed with conversion. Their sword
was the sword of rulers, quite like any of
the Hindu kings, meant to subjugate people
and amass wealth. Largely, people of the
lower castes became Muslims and that
really lies at the root of Bhagwats
brahmanic hatred. The lower castes
willingly embraced Islam because of its
egalitarianism, experienced through the
Sufis, Islams mystics, who preached love
and compassion in an idiom that appealed
to them.

Deaths dance
macabre @ Charlie
Hebdo
Agreed, terrorism cannot be pigeonholed as
Islamic, Christian or religion-specific but the
latest deaths dance macabre at Charlie
Hebdos headquar ters in Paris, again engenders the issue of Islamic terrorism because it
happened in the wake of Peshawar school
massacre. Rabid intolerance and extreme rigidity have traduced the image of Islam. A religion thats not open to satire is a deadwood,
aptly opined the US novelist John Updike. The
slain editor of the French weekly ((Hebdo is
French slang for weekly) may have exceeded
his editorial rights and limits, but to be gunned
down for that is too much. The car toonists,
who caricatured revered Islamic characters,
also went beyond harmless caricaturing. But to
kill them is a sign of venomous religious intolerance. All these (mis)deeds by the zealots are
not only sullying the escutcheon of Islam but
also of all religions. All faiths have suddenly
become equally intolerant.
The great sociologist MacIver (who collaborated with Page) coined an apposite
phrase,Pathological Nostalgic Syndrome in his
seminal essay, Evolving and devolving societies (re-edited by Dean Rusk, Cambridge,
1974). Its fully applicable to the asinine Indian
mindset that almost collectively believes that
the ancient India had all the knowledge but it
gladly gave away its wisdom to the west! This
sick mindset labours under the false belief that
the ancient India even knew how to fly planes
and was knowledgeable about all modern
things! What should we call it? If the Vedic India
knew everything, whyre we still so abjectly
dependent on the west in every respect? Why
didnt we spread our fantastic knowledge and
let the rest of the world avail itself of it? The fact
is, India and her people are a complacent lot.
Were veritable lotus-eaters. Weve not done
anything remarkable and when others get the
credit, we try to belittle them. This is a defeatist
mentality. Its been categorically proven that
hardly anything worthwhile was invented by the
ancient Indians. We must be largehear ted
enough to praise if someone else has achieved
something, rather than pull down the achievers.

The central point is that RSS does not recognise Indian nationalism
and holds on to Hindu nationalism and the manoeuvre for this
conversion is being passed off as Ghar Wapsi while dubbing other
conversions as forcible. Rather than recognizing the qualitative change
in the formation of India as the nation state, it is stuck to the pastoralfeudal-preindustrial society with the values of caste and gender...
Christians had shown either stability, or an statistical by insignificant rise in the percentage of
Christians during the time Pastor Staines was
working there.
How have conversions taken place in India?
We can examine this in two stages. In medieval
period, conversion to Islam took place mainly due
to caste oppression, as pointed out by Swami
Vivekananda, Why amongst the poor of India so
many are Mohammadans? It is nonsense to say
that they were converted by the sword. It was to
gain liberty from zamindars and priests
(Collected Works- Vol. 8- Page 330). Surely, a
small section did convert to Islam due to anticipation of reward by Muslim kings, a smaller section
due to fear and a substantial chunk due to the
social interaction as seen in the Muslims of
Malabar coast and the Muslims of Mewat.
Major conversion to Islam during medieval
time was due to the influence of Sufi saints,
whose dargahs the untouchables could also visit.
Since even today one-fourth of the population
holds to the norms of untouchablity, it is not surprising that some dominated castes do keep
deciding to leave the fold of Hinduism, as seen by
Dr. Ambedkar, who left Hinduism with the proclamation, I was born a Hindu. That was not in my
hands. But I will not die a Hindu.
Conversions to Christianity did not begin with
the coming of the British, as propagated by some.
Indian Christianity is centuries-old, entering India
with the coming of St. Thomas in the first century.
Some doubt this version and hold that Christianity
came here the in fifth century. Christian missionaries have been working here in the neglected
Adivasi areas, providing health and educational
services, the appeal of which prompted many an
Adivasis-Dalits to embrace this religion.
It is only since the last six decades that communal forces have been showing discomfort with
missionaries working in the Adivasi areas. AntiChristian violence has been more marked in those
areas. Not to forget here is the point that many
Christian educational institutions are located in
cities, where all sections of society vie with each
other to send their children. One can also concede that a few of these missions may be aiming
for conversion through prayer and healing services.
The question of allurement and fraud, if at all,
may be a small component of the phenomenon of
conversion to Christianity. Most of the attacks and
accusations which took place against Christian
missionaries came when they were holding prayer
meetings. The money they receive comes through
proper FCRA channel, and many NGOs, including
organisations like RSS also receive foreign funds,
to be sure.
Now the assertion is made that what RSS
affiliates do is simple Ghar Wapsi. Voluntary conversions have very much been a part of caste-ridden Indian society. It is another matter that even
the Christian and Muslim communities could not
remain free from this caste virus, but the hope of
the dominated castes to get social justice has
played a major role in changing their faith. The
RSS claim that the ancestors of all these converts
were Hindus has no relevance in the debate. How

Dr. Khan said on 8 January that Islam and Muslims reject murder
of innocents of any faith or nationality. He said, only courts of law
are authorised to sentence people and only a properly constituted
Muslim state can declare Jihad.
Dr Khan said that faceless individuals and clandestine organisations do not have power to dispense justice and take lives. This
is the neo-Kharijite ideology which is rejected by an overwhelming majority of Muslims all over the world. He added that at the
same time we condemn terror unleashed by western powers and
Zionist occupiers of Palestine which motivates misguided individuals and outfits to take the law in their own hands. He added that
freedom of expression must be respected in all civilised societies
but it should be limited to constructive criticism and should not
abuse icons and scriptures held sacred by believers of different

Muslims of Hans Kalan village near Jagraon tehsil in Punjab offered prayers again on 21 December
in a mosque which had been under illegal occupation for the past 67 years. A spokesman of Majlis
Ahrar-e Islam said that the mosque had been illegally occupied since partition. A family had occupied this mosque and had been living there for the last ten years. But after the efforts of Shahi Imam
of Punjab, Maulana Habibur Rahman Sani Ludhianavi, who took initiative when two Muslim families living in the village approached him to restore the dignity of the mosque. Maulana Habibur
Rahman with the help of local Sikhs and Hindus succeeded to get mosque vacated and helped to
reconstruct it.
A resident of the village, Ajayeb Singh, said that he used to visit this mosque during his childhood days but it ceased to function as a mosque after partition. After offering the Namaz, Maulana
Habibur Rahman said that those who were trying to create communal hatred should learn the
Hindu-Muslim unity and love from this incidence. Sarpanch of the village, Gurdeep Singh, presented a memento to Maulana Habibur Rahman on this occasion.
In a similar incident, a mosque in Ambalas Tandoora Bazar was reclaimed last month through
the efforts of Jamiat Shah Waliullah of Phulat. Prayer was offered here for the first time since partition on 15 December.
In a third incident of this kind, a mosque in Panipat was vacated on 5 December last year when
Shyam Lal. who was occupying it since the last 65 years, agreed to vacate it after he was paid an
amount to compensate him for the structure he had built there. This was achieved by local Muslims
who were supported by local Hindu leaders including Ram Kishan and Babu Ram. Five- times
prayers have been resumed in this mosque. (Jawed Akhter)
Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid
dispute was nearly resolved,
claims Akhara Parishad
The President of All India Akhara Parishad, Gyan Das of Ayodhya,
has claimed that the controversy over Ram Mandir and Babri
Masjid was resolved just after the verdict of the Allahabad High
Court in 2010. He said that after having consultation with Hashim
Ansari, one of the oldest litigants in Babri Masjid case, all groups
had agreed to a resolution which was about to be signed. In the
meantime, the efforts to resolve the issue were thwarted by BJP
MP, Vinay Katiyar, and the leader of Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Ashok
Singhal, who did not want Ram Mandir to be constructed as they
were doing only politics. On 2 December last year when Hashim
Ansari threatened to withdraw from the case, tired over the neverending lawsuit, the chances of an out-of-court settlement became
uncertain. Recently he has written a letter to Narendra Modi and
asked him to bring a solution acceptable to both the parties.
Attempt for an out-of-the-court settlement should be made to
bring about a consensus of opinion between Hindus and Muslims
so that a resolution to the dispute could be found soon, Hashim
Ansari said in his letter. Hashim Ansari, 96, is not the lone voice
seeking resolution to the dispute. After the demolition of Babri
Masjid on 6 December, 1992 several attempts were made to
negotiate peace. But there was no breakthrough as both sides
stuck to their obstinate positions claiming their exclusive right to
the disputed land.
On 30 September, 2010, the Allahabad High Court gave its
verdict to trifurcate the 1,500 sqm of disputed land into Ramlala,
Nirmohi Akhara and Central Sunni Waqf board, but it was not
accepted by any side. Mahant Gyan Das and Hashim Ansari feel
that leaders from both communities are not serious about the
issue and are using this only for their political benefit.

Mumbai-attack
revisited
JAWED AKHTER
The recent revelations of New York Times, ProPublica and the PBS
series Frontline show that US, UK and India had 26/11 intelligence
which together could have prevented the deadly terror attack in
Mumbai on that fateful day in 2008.
According to the classified documents made public by Edward
Snowden, the former National Security Agency (NSA) contractor,
former American and Indian officials did not know that by
September, the British were spying on many of Lashkar-Toiba technology chief Zarrar Shahs on-line activities, tracking his Internet
searches and messages. The hidden history of the Mumbai
attacks reveals the vulnerability as well as the strengths of computer surveillance and intercepts as a counter-terrorism weapon.
Zarrar Shah and his fellow conspirators used Google Earth to
show militants the routes to their targets in Mumbai. He set up an
Internet phone system to disguise his location by outing his calls
through New Jersey. Shortly before the assault that would kill 166
people, Shah searched online for a Jewish hostel and two luxury
hotels, all sites of the strikes in Mumbai.
Shah drew similar scrutiny from an Indian intelligence agency,
according to a former official. The US was unaware of the two
agencies efforts, but had picked up signs of a plot through other
electronic and human sources, and had warned Indian security
officials several times in the months before the attack. What happened next may rank among the most devastating near-misses in
the history of spycraft.
The intelligence agencies of the three nations did not pull
together all the strands gathered by their high-tech surveillance
and other tools, which would have allowed them to disrupt the terror strike. US spy agencies also alerted their British counterparts.
It is unclear if the warnings led to the targeting of Shahs communications, but by the fall of 2008, the British had found a way to
monitor LeTs digital networks. So had the Indians. But until the
attack, there was no communication between these two countries

Not long after the British gained access to his communications, Shah contacted a New Jersey company, posing online as an
Indian reseller of telephone services named Kharak Singh, purporting to be based in Mumbai. His Indian persona started haggling
over the price of a voice-over-internet phone service (VoIP) that
had been chosen because it would make calls between Pakistan
and the terrorists in Mumbai appear as if they were originating in
Austria and New Jersey. If Shah made any attempt to hide his
malevolent intentions, he did not have much success at it. He
repeatedly displayed some key interests: small-scale warfare,
secret communications, tourist and military locations in India,
extremist ideology and Mumbai. He searched for Sun Tzus Art of
War, previous terror strikes in India and weather forecasts in the
Arabian Sea, typed 4 star hotel in delhi and taj hotel, and visited mapsofindia.com to pore over sites in and around Mumbai,
the documents show.
Ajmal Kasab, the only terrorist who survived the Mumbai
attacks, watched Shah display some of his technical prowess. In
mid-September, Shah and fellow plotters used Google Earth and
other material to show Kasab and nine other young Pakistani terrorists their targets in Mumbai, according to court testimony.
Still, the sheer scale of Zarrars ambition might have served as
a smokescreen for his focus on the city. For example, he also
showed interest in Kashmir, the Indian Punjab, New Delhi,
Afghanistan and the United States Army in Germany and Canada.
He constantly flipped back and forth among Internet porn and
entertainment sites while he was carrying out his work.
In November, 2008, the VoIPs companys owner wrote to the
fictitious Indian reseller complaining that no traffic was running on
the digital phone network. Shahs reply was ominous, according to
Indian law enforcement officials, who obtained evidence from the
companys communications records with FBI assistance after the
attack. By 24 November, Shah had moved to the Karachi suburbs,
where he set up an electronic control room with the help of an
Indian militant named Abu Jundal, according to his later confession to the Indian authorities. It was from this room that Mir, Shah
and others would issue minute-by-minute instructions to the
assault team once the attacks began. On Nov. 25, Abu Jundal tested the VoIP software on four laptops spread out on four small
tables facing a pair of televisions as the plotters, including Mir,
Shah and Lakhvi, waited for the killings to begin.
Before the attacks started on 26 November, the documents

Communal forces
run riot during Eid
Miladun Nabi
JAWED AKHTER
After BJP came to power at the centre, incidents of communal
violence and riots are taking place regularly. Frequent attacks on
minorities especially Muslims and Christians have increased
creating communal tension in different parts of the country. After
a clash between youth on the occasion of Eid Miladun Nabi in
Lal Bagh and Parel area of Mumbai, police registered complaint
on 5 January against 50-60 people for provoking violence and
interfering in the work of police. Police said that a \clash took
place at around 8 pm on 4 January near Bharatmata Junction
which later led to violence. Mumbai police commissioner,
Rakesh Maria said that police with the help of six mobile service-providers have been appealing to people to maintain peace
and not heed to rumours. He further said that no arrest has yet
been made in this case, though he accepted that during the clash
6-8 persons received injuries. Additional police commissioner,
RD Shinde said that stone-pelting happened not only in Lal Bagh
and Parel, but also the areas of Worli and Byculla were tense due
to sporadic clashes.
Miscreants are now using social networking sites to incite
communal tension in Mumbai and its suburbs. Mumbai police are
trying to find out the culprit who posted distorted and offensive
pictures on whatsapp, and abusive comments on facebook and
twitter. The culprits can be booked under IT Act and Mumbai
Police Act.
Maulana Moyeen Miyan said that some Muslim youth
behaved irresponsibly and immorally during the procession which
was one of reasons of the clashes. Vice Chairman of Khilafat
House, Sarfaraz Aarzoo, said that the pictures posted on social
media had nothing to do with real incidents, and this should be
investigated properly.
About 10 people, including children and policemen, received

about 15-20 minutes of stone-pelting when the procession was
winding down in Barwadih under Mufassil police station. Seven
bikes and two four-wheelers were set on fire and two other buses
were damaged. Some people, including children and some personnel, received injuries, according to a police statement.

when two communities clashed on the issue of electricity wires
which were touched by the decorated trucks of the procession.

Two people received bullet injuries in the firing. Hardly this tensedsituation died down that another clash took place in Nai Ki Mandi.
The people of two communities resorted to stone-pelting and firing for an hour. People from the Muslim community blamed police
for one-sided action. Police controlled the situation by firing rubber bullets. PAC forces were deployed to control the situation. SP

police lodged an FIR while another complaint was lodged by the
procession committee. Police have submitted its initial report

Okay, you

Forget positive

Im
going to dwell on all the daunting challenges I face in my job. But, unfortunately,
dwelling on reality doesnt help much either.
What does help is mental contrasting, an
exercise that brings together our positive
fantasy about the future with a visualization
of the obstacle standing in the way. Even
more beneficial is adding if - then planning
that allows you to address the obstacle
when it arises.
In our research, weve developed a mental contrasting tool called WOOP - Wish,
Outcome, Obstacle, Plan. Heres how it
works: Find a quiet place where you wont
be disturbed, switch off your devices, and
close your eyes. Name a wish that is attainable or realistic for you - say, landing a new
client. Then imagine for a few minutes what
would happen if that wish came true, letting
the images flow freely through your mind.
Then change things up. Identify the main
obstacle inside you that stands in the way,
and imagine it for a few minutes. Now on to
your plan: If faced with obstacle X, then you
will take effective action Y in response.
WOOP is simple, easy, and inexpensive so much so that you might not think it would
work.
After all, behaviour change usually
requires expensive coaching or training programs, right? Our results suggest not. In a
study of health care providers, we found
that those who used WOOP were significantly more engaged with their work and less
stressed than members of a control group.
In studies of college students enrolled in
a vocational business program, we found
that it helped them manage their time better.
And weve also used WOOP to help school
children study more for the PSAT, do more
homework, and get better grades.
Why does it work? Because the process
either helps people understand their wishes
are attainable, giving them energy and direction, heightening their engagement and
prompting them to act; or it helps them realize their wishes are unrealistic, leading them
to disengage and freeing them up to pursue
other, more promising endeavours.
Although positive thinking feels good in
the moment, it often bears a false promise.
Only when its paired with a clear view of
potential obstacles will it consistently produce desirable results.

their support.
Dr Koul has gone to the extent of saying that politically it wont
be suicidal for PDP to form a government with BJP as the party
(PDP) would govern the state on their own terms and conditions.
He elaborated that the party, at the initial stage, has put forth five
conditions to enter into an alliance with BJP.
The conditions reportedly include revocation of AFSPA from
peaceful areas, strengthening of Article 370, respect for Self-Rule
proposal, full tenure for party patron as Chief Minister of state and
comprehensive package and relief for flood hit people of the Valley.
BJP too is holding discussions with various political parties.
The partys National General Secretary Ram Madhav met several
PDP leaders and National Conference during his day-long stay in
the Valley, December 26. Prior to flying to Srinagar, he discussed
the issue threadbare with his party legislators in Jammu. The party
has reportedly zeroed-in on Dr Nirmal Singh or Dr Jitender Singh
as its Legislative Party Leader. Dr. Jitender Singh is Union Minister
whereas Dr. Nirmal Singh is senior BJP leader and legislator from
Billawar Assembly constituency in Kathua district in Jammu
region.
Few non-political groups too have expressed their viewpoints.
All Parties Sikh Coordination Committee chairman Jagmohan
Singh Raina, December 25, exuded confidence that the PDP-BJP
alliance would form a stable government in the state. The
Committee had already expressed its support to PDP, prior to the
Assembly elections.
Meanwhile, chairing a meeting of the conglomerates executive
body (Majlis-e-Shoora), Hurriyat (G) chairman Syed Ali Shah

Modis
Silence...!
Silence is not always golden and perhaps never
in Indian politics, particularly when the politician at the helm is expected to make his stand
clear on controversial issues in the news.
Not surprisingly, questions are being raised
on Prime Minister Narendra Modi having so far
refrained from commenting on Sangh Parivar activists having
gone overboard in promoting their communal designs. Modis
silence may be equated with his tacit approval of their activities. It may also be viewed as his playing a politically cautious
role towards Sangh Parivar for several reasons. One of these is
his political background being closely linked with this organisation. Secondly, Modi probably counts strongly on their support
at the grassroots to promote his own political image. In this
context, Modi does not want to take the risk of angering them
and thus losing their support. And this demands analysis of how
strong should Sangh Parivars position in Indian politics be
viewed as?
If Modi was confident of their communal agendas political
impact, it is indeed surprising that he preferred promoting his
secular mask and development plans during his campaign for
Lok Sabha elections. This also implies that Modi was and probably still is well aware of the political risk linked with supporting Sangh Parivars communal agenda. Nevertheless, with
Sangh Parivar having played a key role in promoting and advertising his political image, Modi does not want to alienate them
by taking any strong action against their communal activities,
including commenting against the same. But for how long can
Modi really afford to remain silent against their communal
activities?
The situation would have been different if Sangh Parivar
and BJP were well spread across the country. If they were,
questions would not have probably been raised regarding
Modis silence against their communal activities. Perhaps, it is
time Modi gave some importance to their numerical standing in
India. Certainly, BJP has been faring well in Indian politics and
its membership is stated to have crossed three crore mark
recently. There is no specific record of the membership
strength of Sangh Parivar or of its key organisation, Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Accepting that BJPs strength has
really reached the stated figure, what does this really indicate
about its standing in India? The Indian population has 121 crore
people. A strength of three crore constitutes less than three
percent of the countrys population.
Statistically speaking, BJPs strength constitutes less than
three percent of even the countrys Hindu population. The
Indian population is stated to include more than 80 percent
Hindus. Interestingly, BJPs membership strength is less than
that of the population of Muslims in this country. Indias population includes 13.8 percent Muslims.
The message is simple. By remaining silent on communal,
anti-Muslim activities being indulged by Sangh Parivar
activists, Modi is trying not to offend less than five percent of
this countrys population. At the same time, the communal
activities of the same organisation have invited criticism from
strong secular voices, politicians, Muslims as well as mediapersons.
In his bid to appease Sangh Parivar, Modi has allowed
questions to be raised about his political as well as secular
stature among a much larger percentage of the countrys pop-
11
ulation.
This also raises questions about the leadership credentials
of Modi. However strong may his background from the ranks of
Sangh Parivar be, at present, the members of this organisation
are expected to respect him as an important leader who heads
the country as the Prime Minister. They are expected to give
substantial importance to ensure that his image as the countrys Prime Minister is not damaged by their activities. So far,
as has been noted, Sangh Parivar activists appear to have
given greater importance to their communal activities. They are
apparently guided by the belief that with Modi as the countrys
Prime Minister they can afford to indulge in their communal
activities. Modis silence has probably encouraged them to pursue this line. And this raises the question on whether Modi has
allowed them to take the lead in communally-sensitive matters by choosing to remain silent, which is equivalent to his
turning a blind eye to their activities. Is a strong leader expected to pursue such a policy? Is a strong leader expected to
ignore activities that can prove politically damaging for his own
image and his party? And if a leader deliberately chooses to
remain quiet towards pursuit of such communal activities,
would it be appropriate to rank him as a strong leader? The
only answer to these questions is: certainly not.
Considering that Modi has only recently joined national
politics, perhaps it is as yet too early to expect him break away
from a stream of politics that guided him when he headed
Gujarat politics. Yet, as the countrys premier, it is time he
gave greater importance to his leadership credentials being
questioned on his remaining silent about Sangh Parivars communal agenda. If nothing else, at least statistics regarding
Sangh Parivars standing in India against that of secular
Hindus and Muslims should prompt him to take a firm stand on
this issue.

mostly keep silent during the meetings but would very minutely

his usual highly sophisticated low pitch eloquence. Many significant additions to the Sachar Report emanated from his specific

Aslam Parvez, Principal of Zakir Husain College said while speaking on this occasion that dividing education into religious and
worldly departments is a tragedy. Muslims should pay equal
attention to both religious and modern education without which
they cannot progress. In addition to the above students three
Muslim students who are doing higher education in Botany also
were honoured with prizes. It is however not mentioned what
awards were given to them by AFMI and if these were cash
awards, and cheques of what amount were given to them. In this
function tributes were paid to Saiyid Hamid, intellectual, retired
IAS offier and VC of AMU who died recently. All the audience
stood up and observed two minutes silence to pay homage.

Charlie Hebdo:
Who Is To Blame?
DR. LUDWIG WATZAL
Two Muslim killers wiped out the whole editorial
team of the satirical weekly "Charlie Hebdo" at
noontime in Paris on Wednesday, January 7,
2015. This cold-blooded murder is an indefensible crime. The killers were said to claim that they
have "avenged the Prophet Mohammad". And
that they have shouted "Allahu Akbar", the usual
war cry also of fake Islamist terrorists. Have they committed their
heinous crime in the name or in defense of Islam? Charlie Hebdo
has a long history of angering Muslims with cartoons, but it caricatured also all religions.
Western politicians designated the event as an attack on freedom of press and freedom of speech, or on all of us. French
President Francois Hollande declared that France will not be intimidated and would not give up its freedom. Was the satirical magazine really a guardian of freedom of press or just a so-called critical magazine, which justified the US-led aggressions in the
Muslim world in the name of human rights? Minutes before the
attack, the magazine had tweeted a cartoon about the leader of the
Islamic State.
It seems as if the Islamic fanatics reflected the brutal religious
war being waged in Iraq and Syria and perhaps soon in Yemen and
Saudi-Arabia, too, which is going to effect the Western world. The
wars of the US Empire and its willful allies against the Muslim
world are a hotbed for Islamic radicalism. The scenario follows a
tit for tat logic. The atrocities, committed by Bush, Blair, Sarkozy
and Hollande, played right in the hands of modern jihadists. The
only remedy to stop the ride into the abyss is to terminate the war
against the regime of Bashar al-Assad and face the fundamentalist Saudi-Arabian dictatorship head-on.
France is a "stalwart ally" of the US-led war against the socalled Islamic State (IS or ISIL), as US President Obama's press
secretary, Josh Earnest, announced and he added "We know they
are not going to be cowed by this terrible act." The US-led Western
coalition has been killing Muslims by the Millions and ravaged
their countries since their attack on Afghanistan and Iraq. Are the
European-born jihadists who return from their "adventurers" in
Syria, Iraq and elsewhere considered the blowback of the murderous wars of Western imperialism waged in Afghanistan, Iraq,
Libya, Syria, Yemen or Mali?
France and Great Britain were leading the attack on Libya, and
France was at the helm when an attack on Syria was in the
pipeline. The former President Nikolas Sarkozy got the order to
raid Libya from a bellicose philosophy professor via mobile, and
President Hollande tried to drag Obama in another military adventure in Syria. The war against ISIL, which is a US and SaudiArabian creation in order to break up both countries, will continue
to promote the alienation between the Muslin world and the West.
The consequence of these wars are European jihadists moving to
the Middle East and taking part in the "clash of civilizations", which
was also an invention by US intellectuals in lieu of a lack of a
bogeyman after the disappearance of Soviet-style communism.
In promoting the Islamic enemy image, "Charlie Hebdo" was not
the real model of freedom of speech. It was rather one of many
mouthpieces of a predominant trend all across Europe that is
racist, islamophobic, xenophobic and exclusively Western valueoriented. This arrogant attitude is now bearing terrible fruit.
Nevertheless, the question remains: Who benefits from it?

ABHAY KUMAR
Not many political leaders of the twentieth century have so much
changed the landscape of Indian politics as Kanshi Ram did. Born
in a Ramdasia Chamar family in a village of Punjab, in 1934 he
struggled through his life with the aim of politically empowering
the most deprived sections of society. Among his many achievements was that he succeeded in installing a Dalit woman as the
chief minister of Uttar Pradesh. Much of his eventful life has been
portrayed in a political biography authored by the noted social historian and cultural anthropologist Badri Narayan.
It comprises eight chapters, portraying his childhood, political
journey, beginning from Maharashtra to Uttar Pradesh, as well as
his political ideas. Moreover, the book also gives a brief account
of the criticisms of Kanshi Ram and the Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP).
The author says that all Dalits whom he interacted with
acknowledged Kanshi Ram had inculcated a strong sense of confidence and self respect in them. Narayan says Ram was a master strategist, who brought Dalits, Adivasis, Backwards, and religious minorities under the social category of Bahujan, making
them realise the value of their vote, floating the BSP in1984 that
represented freedom and respect and brought about social transformation.
The first chapter discusses his childhood. Born on March 15,
1934 in a relatively-well off family, he had his early education at
Government Primary School Milakpur, Punjab. Like most of Dalit
students he also faced discrimination at the hands of teachers. At
the school a different pot for Dalits was kept to drink water from.
Yet another incident of caste discrimination that had a deep
impact on his life was when a senior officer mistreated and humiliated his father.
Overcoming barriers of caste, he continued to do well in his
studies and kept his interests in sports as well. In 1956, he

self-respect movement among Dalits and Backwards. For example, the BSP in order to mobilise Bahujans, constructed and popularised the subaltern icons such as Buddha, Kabir, Ravidas, Daria
Sahib etc. While the author has done a fairly good job of analysing
the cultural politics of Kanshi Ram, he mentions in passing a
problematic paragraph about Guru Ravidas whom he interprets as
a bulwark against frantic Muslim rulers who wanted to convert
lower castes to Islam. According to Badri Narayan, In addition,
the Mughal rulers were frantically converting the lower castes to
Islam through various allurements and temptations in order to
expand their numbers and consolidate their position in India. Sant
Ravidas, through his preaching, tried to reform Hindu society so
that the lower castes were not tempted to convert to Islam and the
Varna system was maintained (p. 121).
The myths and propagandas of the Hindu Right that the
medieval period saw the forceful conversion of Hindus to Islam
has been refuted by many secular historians. They have largely
agreed that the egalitarian ideology of Islam provided a relief to
lower castes, who were suppressed by the Brahminical social
order.
The fifth chapter is about the BSP, its bid for power and the
role of Kanshi Ram. The author rightly acknowledges Kanshirams
ability to sway and mobilize large crowds, who realised that in
democracy if the oppressed majority are made conscious of their
votes the master key, or Guru Killi, which Kanshi Ram would often
refer to, can be seized. As he always spoke in peoples language,
his concept of democracy is expressed in these simple yet profound words: Lokshahi mein rani aur mehtarani ki keemat ek hi
hoti hai. (In a democracy the worth of a queen and that of a maid
is the same, p. 165). Kanshi Ram, rejecting the radical armed
struggle pursued by a section of communists mobilised the
Bahujan through Constitutional means and democratic processes.
The sixth, seventh and eighth chapters are a discussion of the
criticism and limitations of Kanshi Ram and his party. For
instance, he was alleged to have indulged in opportunism as a
strategy. For example, the BSP, according to his critics, welcomed
defectors like Arif Mohammad Khan and Akbar Ahmed Dumpy,
while it forged alliances with the BJP which it had opposed.
Kanshiram, writes Narayan, faced the greatest flak in his political career over the BSP coming to power twice in UP with the
support of the BJP (p. 181)
Ram at Ayodhya, Krishna at Mathura, Shiva at Kashi and
Viswanath in Varansi holiest for Hindus like Kaaba and Bethlehem
for Muslims and Christians caused a stir.
Keshavram Kashiram (Keka) Shashtri formed Vishwa Hindu
Parishad (VHP) on 29 August 1964 for Hindu social consolidation.
Swami Chinmayananda, the first VHP president, had least influence
on BJS in the 1960s. VHP proved to be a milestone for BJP after 25
years when Indias secularism diminished through Ayodhya.
A frenzied Hindu mob demolished Babri Masjid on December
6, 1992 while Advani and other BJP/VHP leaders witnessed it.
Narasimha Rao led Congress government at the Centre was its
silent spectator. A series of communal riots erupted across India
leading to mass murder of Muslims and destruction of their property on a huge scale. Within the next 10 years came the Sanghled pogrom in Gujarat in 2002.
The BJP lost 2004 polls narrowly. A turning point came when
Vajpayee was out of power and RSS-deputed Rajnath Singh to
preside over the party. Advani led the party in 2008 general elections, with a dream to become prime minister, but he lost.
Indira Gandhis assassination on October 31, 1984 by Sikh
bodyguards brought a sympathy wave for Congress. Winning 414
seats, it had come into power while BJP encountered obliteration
with a mere two seats, one each from Gujarat and Andhra
Pradesh. Vajpayee had stepped down to pave the way for Advani
to lead the party, who alongside MM Joshi, Kedar Nath Sahni,
Pramod Mahajan and K. L. Sharma overhauled it. Advani tried to
rebuild the party on an anti-Muslim platform.
Communal riots broke out in Mumbai, Surat and Bhopal after
the Babri Masjid demolition. It was time for BJP to take Ayodhya
issue to the next level-Ram Mandir construction.
After 13 days a Vajpayee-led government at the Centre fell in
1996 as it had only 161 seats in Lok Sabha. BJP increased its
seats to 182 after fresh elections and Atal Behari Vajpayee
became prime minister again on 19 March 1998.
Vajpayee faced embarrassment when the then BJP president, Bangaru Laxman was caught on camera accepting bribe.
Hawala operator SK Jain claimed to have paid LK Advani
Rs 35 lakhs which stopped him from staking a claim to premiership in 1996 and 1998. He came in forefront once again
in 2009 elections with the BJP projecting him as prime ministerial candidate that he would always fancy. The partys India
Shining and Feel good factor did not work and it got only
116 seats, less than 138 of 2004.
The BJP was got restructured on March 31, 2013 for 2014
general elections. Modi became the partys parliamentary
board member. He became chief of campaign committee on
June 9, 2013 and prime ministerial candidate on September
14, 2013. Advani resigned from the partys parliamentary
board, national executive and election committee.
Narendra Modi became prime minister in 2014. Paradoxically,
the historic win made the party tinnier than the prime minister.

Asif Ali. She inspired Muslim women through her speeches to join the non-cooperation movement. In May
1920, she delivered a historic speech in which she said, "We should hold our religion firm and socially

Ingredients:
500 gm rice (long grain, basmati rice);
500 gm chicken, in evenly sized pieces
A Z R
Marinade:
2 tsp ground white pepper;
Juice of 1/2 lemon (skip if marinating for anything over 4 hours)
1/2 Tbsp desi ghee; 2 tsp garlic paste;
1.5 tsp ginger paste; 1 cup onion, chopped;
2 tsp chilli powder; 1 tsp fennel or saunf powder;

Cut the chicken into even sized pieces. In a bowl add all the marinade

hours, overnight in the fridge is also alright.
Put the water with the ball strainer on boil. The utensil should be big
enough to accommodate 500 grams of cooked rice, along with excess
water. Make sure the water and the rice doesn't boil over.
In the meanwhile heat ghee/oil in a pan and add all the spices for the
masala, take the garam masala out When the spices are roasted and leave
of their fragrance, add the onions and fry till still retain a bit of their original color, they'll cook in their own heat and become golden. Take it out and
divide in two. Grind one part with the other masala and jaiphal. Youll need
the other part to add to the cooked chicken. Set aside.

Finishing Spices:
1/2 tsp green cardamom powder
1/2 tsp fennel powder
1/2 cup cream (optional, won't make a difference)
3 tsp kewra water; half a javitri, grated

and add a cup of yogurt. Keep 3 cooked, dried, pureed tomatoes at hand.
If you feel the chicken is cooking fast, add them to the pan/if you like
gravy add them any way but cook them separately.
Once the water boils, add the rice to it. Cook for about 7 minutes or till the
rice is nearly done. Strain and work quickly so the rice doesn't cool down.

Add the rice to the grated ginger and sliced green chillies, et al., in the utensil.
In the layering utensil add rice in a third, slightly overlapping with the chicken mix, add the green chilli and
fried onion rice in one part, taking care that the onion rice doesnt overlap much with the chiken mix.
Let it cook on low heat (on dum, in it's own heat) covered with a wet kitchen towel for about half an hour
or 60 minutes. (Till the chicken and rice are fully cooked.)
Check the seasoning before adding rice after which you would not be able
to adjust it.

Hindutva & Zionism
Anand Patwardhan (MG, Dec. 1-15) has very straightforward analysed
the Sangh Parivars activities. Yet may humble mind wonders how despite
Golwalkars love for Hitler the Zionist state is friendly with the Sangh?!

Pravasi Divas
The newspapers are full of the latest sarkari natak, the Pravasi Divas.
While one M. K. Gandhi and one N. D. Modi appear prominently, easily the
most patriotic Bharatiya of the 20th century, the late N. V. Godse, is not
mentioned even in passing. I protest this shabby treatment of a man who
is to be honoured with a bust in Parliament and a temple in Sitapur.

Mock battle
So-called secular and saffron parties have been playing noora kushti to
deceive Muslims and usurp Muslim dues. In the 31 Dec. night a mock
drill to nab terrorists was aired on news channels. The terror actors were
wearing skull-caps. Again on 1 January, skull cap-wearing terror actors
shouting Islamic slogans during a mock drill in Gujarat appeared in media
after Surat mock drill episode. TV debates started. Leaders of Congress
and other parties attacked BJPs mindset profiling Muslims as
terrorists. Subarmanium Swamy of BJP replied that in Congress-ruled
stated Maharashtra mock terror drill with terror actors wore skull-caps in
Ambadkar Stadium on 8 Sept., 2011. Congress brought TADA, BJP
introduced POTA. BJP banned SIMI, Congress apealed to SC after High
Court lifted the banl it rejected the demand for inquiry in the fake Batla
House encounter which Congress declared as genuine. Safforn brigade
protested against AMU campus in Kishanganj and dubbed it Terror
School, Congress in eight year could not allow it to be built and before
parliamentary elections Sonia Gandhi laid the foundation-stone without
any budgetary allocations... In Indian politics, noora kushti is a tamasha
to loot Muslim share in every walk of life.

Stop foul religious conversation and dont be the learned fools
Cruelty, riots, holocausts and killings of innocent citizens in India re the
hobby of the saffaronists. Since, they assumed the rule in Delhi. They
have turned as big bosses of backward communities and dalits. Wo gave
this patronage to the saffaronists to convert people to superstitious and
barbarism. The citizens are being forced to leave monotheism and enter
into polytheism. Every citizens has right to live in the country according
to his religion. No rule, law or constitution to force a person to convert
another religion. Saffaronists are worshiping animals, reptiles, manmade
idols of stones, clay, metals, wood etc. A structure for worshiping
almighty god who created the universe and mankind was demolished in
day light with the support of police, military and the state chief minister
only to install an idol in the name of Ram which is only a character of
story Ramayana written by Sri Valmikhi which action was a savagery and
a remarkable foolishness in the world history. Paying some money and
threatens the poors who are wandering for a handful of food can easily
be converted, but those converted will not be real idolaters India is going
to perish by such ravage and coward, atrocious behaviour of sangh
parivar, rulers. A total brain wash is urgently needed to them to enable for
maintaining peace, secularism, prosperity and reputation of the country.
Dont show your timidity on innocent Muslims as they are strictly
following and adhering one god and one father. We need DHAN VAPASI ie
the whole wealth of Mughal Kings, Hyderabad Nizams, Arcot Nawabs,
Hyder Ali - Tippu Sulthan of Mysore etc were looted by the Indian Rulers
and smuggled to London which are being sold out bit by bit through
public auction. The original heirs of these wealths are now wandering
across the country for half stomach food. The last Mughal King Jaffer
Shah and his family were driven out from Delhi by British and local Jana
Sangh leaders in the dark night and they were got asylum at Burma
jungles. Now the last Queen andher children are living in the Culcutta
slums. Her sons are working as menials in the culcutta market. Will this
pitiable situation be reformed and returned the wealth, the palaces
including the gold and diamonds to these royal family members. Give
preference to Dhan Vapasi.

Godse and his statue
It is rather disgrace to the Indian nation that a culprit who killed Deshpita
Mahatma Gandhi is now. Being made a hero not only this but his
supporters are making his statue and bring erected , the more
condemned is the fact that the central Government is mute and taking no
action against culprits , all those involved must be hanged.this is crime
more severe than the crime of Indian Mujahifin or the Naxalites , Modi and
the BJP should resign on this misfortune. All the lovers of Bapuji should
make strong protest on this proposal nd all the culprits be hanged. On
janter Manter without delay.

Muslim brotherhood was never a terrorist organisation
In reference to the report published in MG 16-31 December 2014, I would
like to add a few words. After M. Morsi had come to power in Egypt
through democratic way, the scenario of political, socio-economic and
diplomatic welfare of the country were about to revive under his great
leadership. Morsi immediately closed down the Sinai-Palestine corridor
signaling that Egypt would not be part of an unresolving problem, rather
it will take part in solving Palestine problem after becoming a developing
one. Morsi invited then Iran President Mahmud Ahmedinijad to Egypt and
embraced him at the airport which showed his willingness of
inclusiveness. At the same time Morsi was working towards making
Egypt diplomatically important and strong. Now these were the signs
which Israel, west and Saudi Arabia disliked. Someone rightly said that
Israel does not fear even the nuclear arm ;it fears democracy only. Same
was applicable for Saudi Arabia. So, the conspiracy began and Morsis
dream of peaceful, prosperous and strong Egypt was brought down again
to a military paradigm.

Two standards, one for Shah, another for Lakhvi
Today on TV channels two news are being shown which are very
confusing. In one news it is shown that Lakhvi (mastermind of 26/11)
was released on bail by Pakistani Court (in 26/11 case) saying that there
are not sufficient evidences against Lakhvi hence as per Pak court it does
not justify further judicial custody of Lakhvi. But India objects to it
because India says that it has given enough evidences to Pakistan about
complicity of Lakhvi in 26/11. These Indian evidences are allegedly based
mainly on telephone (mobile) conversation between terrorist in Mumbai
(who were carrying out 26/11) and Lakhvi who was allegedly giving
instructions and monitoring 26/11. In second news it is shown that
Subordinate (CBI) Court has given clean chit to Amit shah (Presently BJP

with sugar pre-mixed. Diabetics are faced with the choice of doing
without refreshment or else consuming sweet beverages which do them
harm. It will be easy to serve these beverages without sugar added and
provide sachets of sugar separately. After all, salt and ketchup come in
sachets already. If, for example, six people on a train are given the job of
carrying tea and coffee, two can carry these beverages without sugar
added.

Rajaji deserves to be awarded bharath ratna
Chakravarthi Rajagoplachari, popularly known as Rajaji., was
Tamilnadus - nay, one of Indias - tallest political leader. State and Union
Governments have come and Governments have gone but still not a
single Government cared to takes steps to honour him. Leave alone
Congress Governments, as the Indian National Congress, did not
consider him a good Congressman.. Thats the reason the Congress
rejected his sagacious FORMULA for the grant of freedom to India. May
I respectfully remind the readers that the late lamented Quaide Millath
Ismail Saheb was Rajajis closest associate ; the only leader who
understood him rightly and one who stood by him, shoulder by shoulder,
through thick and thin. The Founder of the Dravida Khazhagam Thalaivar
E. V. Ramaswamy Naicker ( Periyar, as he is affectionally called} openly
declared in a Meeting on the 23rd of June 1947 that Rajaji and Rajaji
alone is competent to create a DRAVIDA NADU to save Dravadians from
Aryan tyranny. Doesnt shall a tall leader deserve a BHARATH RATNA?
One who gives a negative answer, in my view, is a charlatan of the first
waters. I am sure the readers agree with my view.

Are Muntazir al-Zaidis and Amritoshs shoes comparable?
When Iraqs Muntazer al-Zaidi threw the shoe at then-US President
George W. Bush, his act was applauded world across. The act was heroic
and against the person who had commanded so many brutalities in the
world. It was against the man who caused so many lives. It was against
the man who was key in waging unnecessary wars against weak nations.
It was against a very insensitive fellow - a fellow who meant only
American benefits. A fellow who took wars as means to generating more
revenues, more clients on account of terror. A fellow who himself was an
epitome of terror. Muntazer al-Zaidi was a pioneer of this sort of symbolic
act of courage and compassion. Indian avatar of Muntazer al-Zeidi was
Jarnail Singh when he threw his disdainful shoe at then home minister P.
Chidambram. Muntazer al-Zaidi and Jarnail Singh had the same agony
and anguish - the agony of innocent killings of their people and the
anguish of not receiving justice. Muntazer and Jarnail Singh had pain and
they were victims. After that, hurling and throwing shoes and abusing
politicians became a fashion in India. Frequently, so many incidents
followed. Rahul Gandhi, Nitish Kumar and so many have been victim of
this act. Throwing shoe at the Bihar CM Jeetan Ram Manhi is a very
different picture. There is no comparison with this incident with the
previous twos mentioned here. Amritosh Kumar is a forward Hindu and
he is pregnant with hatred for lower class Hindus. When he was throwing
the shoe he was shouting slogans of Forward-Backward discrimination.
And he was shouting slogans as if Manjhi is the root of this sort of
discrimination. He was already charged with three cases amongst one is
atrocity on Dalits. Others are rowdism and travel without ticket. He was
already jailed on account of travelling without ticket. Amritosh Kumar may
be a frustrated individual with the system based on discrimination.
However, it shows something very ugly which is fast emerging on the soil
of Buddha and Chishti. It is intolerance. Intolerance against the poor, the
weak, the backward and the minorities is growing to a danger point.

Jihad
Jihad in todays age is a duty for every single Muslim. The advancement
of secularism and its infiltration into the cultures of the Muslim world
must be matched with equal or greater force. The troops must be rallied,
and the brothers astray must be lead in the unending scrimmage between
these civilizations. Muslims must rejuvenate, join the Global Jihad, and
remove the warmongering, self-imposed guardians of morality from the
forefront of this movement. The hijacking of the soul of Islam by a
Machiavellian faux-clergy class is solely the fault of Muslims refusing to
wage a rebranded Jihad consisting of finance and innovation rather than
Kalashnikovs and bomb vests. The imposition of Western institutions on
a people whose cultures are inherently Islamic creates an insecurity that
can be seen in the rise of the terrorist groups of today. This is not a failing
of the West; in fact it is a success for their nations. This is the failing of
Muslims who did little to create institutions to rival those of the secular
West. The prevalent mentality in the Muslims of today is one of gaining
control of secular institutions. There are many who are attempting to do
so, and many who have been successful. This does not change the
simple fact that those institutions in and of themselves have a secular
purpose. There must be business and societal establishments that
compete with their Godless counterparts in quantitative success without
sacrificing the values that they are based on. They must be Islamic, not
just governed by Muslims. This is not a threat to the West.

Case for a Constitutional Order
Plural society in India has a long history. The Muslim community, for
example, has been here for more than a thousand years as part of a
conglomeration of cultures known Ganga Jamuni Tahzib, i. e., a
synthesis of Indo-Islamic cultures. This phenomenon cannot be grasped
simply in terms of Western categories. If we look at our plural society not
as a western concept but as a de facto social situation and endeavour to
find solution to our complex problems, we come across the Constitution
of India and the secular democratic system established by it as a guide.

ASI renovation of foreign mandirs
Archelogical Survey of India has a deep Hindutva affiliation. It has
extended its work to renovate and restore mandirs in foreign countries to
facilitate puja. But as if it take any masjid in India, it bans namaz there.
After PMs Nepal visit, that countrys famous Pashu Patinath mandir,
Cham mandir (Veitnam) Thirukitti Swaram mandir (Sri Lanka), Anand
mandir, Ta Prom mandir (Combadia), Waat Phaou mandir (South Laos)
are included in ASI;s list and trillions of rupees will be spent on the
renovation of these foreign mandirs. Islamic monuments and Muslim
historical places, forts and masjids are monuments but ASI doesnt care
to preserve them. ASI bans Namaz, for example, in Moti Masjid in Lal
Quila, etc.
