This study was conducted in another teachers classroom and allowed me to see what
she learned after implementing the idea of BYOD. This gave me insight on how I can
effectively implement this idea to promote the use of social media and communication
between teacher and students.

information:
This author offered suggestions how to effectively integrate social media in the
business communication classroom. Had students used social media to complete some
research and class projects.
Social media can help students connect with one another using another platform. A
disadvantage to using social media is the constant change and updating. This can
make it challenging for instructors to keep up to date, and make it more challenging for
both the students and the educators.

Summary of essential
information:
This article explores the different benefits that social media has to offer. It also
explores the different platforms that can be used to support social media. It stated that
social media can be used as a communication tool, collaboration tool, and as an
engagement tool. There are several benefits to using social media, however it is
important for teachers to know how to use these tools effectively, set expectations and
to monitor our students.
What stood out to me the most is the idea of being able to get students to connect with
other people outside of school walls. However, this makes me weary because of
security and privacy purposes. But I think that this would be such a positive
experience with older students who are more responsible and understand how to use
these tools responsibly. But it does allow me to think of ways to encourage peer-topeer collaboration using this tool.

Summary of essential
information:
This study focused on the interest of using Twitter within a classroom setting among
professors undergraduate, and graduate students. They surveyed the students access
and utilization of using Twitter before the study. Undergraduates were much more
involved with Twitter, however all students were involved with a social media account.
About 41% of the faculty was not involved with social media. They then surveyed the
students and professors on whether or not Twitter would be conducive to the classroom
setting by supporting their discussions, finding that graduate students supported the use
by 80% instead of undergrads where about 55% of them did not support the idea. The
faculty did not support the idea of Twitter by about 56%. Professors incorporated
Twitter throughout the time of the course, and then were surveyed again on their
thoughts of incorporating Twitter within the classroom. Although many students
reported that about 76% of the time Twitter offered more support on their discussions,
the use of the social media site was more of a distracter and about 40% of students
would like to use the site as a discussion board again. Only about 24% of faculty
would be willing to implement this tool again. In conclusion, Twitter is a good source
to provide extra support but may not be the best tool for providing consistent feedback
and discussion.
This article supports the idea of the use of Twitter, however it has allowed me to
realize that Twitter may not be the best tool to use as a discussion board. I should
consider using other tools to support student learning, where Twitter may be best used
as a source of communication.

Summary of essential

This study focused on how parents in the K-12 schools can be more engaged with their
childs learning. The study sent a survey to all parents in the Kansas City Public
Schools and discovered some interesting results. Many parents felt that they do not
know a lot about what is going on their childs school, however only 1 in 5 parents
volunteer to help with activities going on but several parents cant go in because of
outside restrictions. The study goes on to discuss recommendations to increase
communication and involvement between the schools and the parents.
Although the study never directly speaks about social media, it does stress the
importance of communication with parents. The article suggests that when trying to
reach out to parents it is important to discuss positive and negative concerns(however
dont overdo the negative), to reach out to parents using various methods, and offer a
variety of engagement options.

Johnsons idea of fostering discussion through social media is very similar to what I
am trying to do with my Twitter account currently. I am trying to get students excited
about what is going on in the classroom and to have them share what they are doing.
What he also continued to mention is how there can be immediate feedback, and allow
students to work collaboratively in many different facets.

This study also researched on if Twitter can be an effective tool within the classroom.
Undergraduate students were surveyed and 34 out of 46 students showed interest in
completing assignments through the use of Twitter. Many of the students were highly
active on the Twitter accounts for the first two weeks of the course, participation then
quickly dropped. Out of the 46 students on 14 of the students completed all
assignments on Twitter. In conclusion the study recommended some changes on how
to implement assignments given on Twitter. Teachers should scaffold, model, and
establish a purpose.

This article gives a great overview and guidelines of how to effectively implement
social media within the classroom. These guidelines included privacy settings, byod,
internet access, and setting expectations. These are all things that should be thought
about and tested prior to implementing social media within the classroom.
Something that I did not think about doing prior to having my students bring their
devices into the classroom is to make sure their devices connect to the internet through
the school and if it allows them to connect to Twitter. Our building has very strict
website permissions, and Twitter may be blocked.

Summary of essential
information:
The study surveyed 79 leadership students and their perceptions of social media. It
asked for students opinions on advantages and disadvantages to social media.
Students answered questions that asked about their comfort level of using the tool, ease
of access, their current use of social media, and perceptions. Overall students were
most comfortable with Facebook than any other social media tool; however many
students were open to the idea of using different/new platforms. Advantages included
ease of communication, networking tool with friends, motivational, and more
engaging. Disadvantages include several students do not use social media, lack of
knowledge on how to use technology, wanting to keep school and social life separate,
and lack of access to the internet.
Only 7.8% of the students used microblogs such as Twitter. This shows that Twitter
may not be as familiar to current students and might need training on how to use this
tool. Also stresses the importance of keeping the account separate from their personal
lives, but need to find a way that allows them to still use their personal account to
avoid having to manage two separate accounts.

Summary of essential
information:
This study focused on how technology can be used to increase student engagement and
the perceptions of both parents and teachers on the use of the effectiveness of
technology to increase parent involvement. They surveyed parents in grades 4-6 and
found that only 36% of parents utilize the school website. They then did parent
interview finding that parents preferred the use of email when contacting teachers,
rather than phone calls or using the schools website. Parents did show interest in
using text messaging and social media as other sources of communication. Teachers
seemed extremely interested in using new means of communication, but feel the need
to be given professional development time to create and learn effective means of
communication
Supports the idea of including different methods of communication through the use of
technology. Parents want to be more involved with their childs school and these
methods allow a quicker and easier way for parents and teachers to stay connected.

This article presented the BRIDGES framework to parent involvement; build, recruit,
individualize, dialogue, generate, empower and strengthen. It spoke about all the
different types of means of communication teachers can implement within their
classrooms to reach out to parents. It also discussed different family events that can be
incorporated within a school year, however it offered sharing out webinars or videos
for parents to watch if they cant attend these sessions.
Potential relevance to

*Parents most noted feedback was that they like to see their childs work; so this led
me to the idea of having students create their own Twitter feeds to share out with
parents what they have learned in class. (BYOD : bring your own device)
*Provided a resourceful link where I can find tips to include on my Twitter account
that parents really enjoyed reading.
*Liked the idea of sharing out informational videos for parents (and I can even share to
students!)
