Fan Heater
Make: FineElements
Model Number: ES1247
Designed in 2012
This fan heater works by pushing air over a heating
device, this air then heats the surrounding room.
When the electromagnet is powered it caused the
motor, connected to the fan, to rotate. It does this
by the current creating a magnetic field that travels
in a circular motion causing rotations.

Parts: Heating Element (coiled wire frame

behind fans), electromagnet, a fan connected to
a motor (which is placed inside the
electromagnet), Thermostat, wires and plastic
casing.

Technical Information

Fan Heater

General Information:
AC Motor - 13 AMPS, 250V

Mass 0.9KG

Blade Length 0.09m

Rotations Per minute 1100

Voltage 230 Volts

Power 1900 Watts

Rotations Per second 1100/60 = 18.3

Input power of fuse P=VI

= 13 x 250
= 3250W

Current =P/V = 1900/230 = 8.26 AMPS

Fuses come in 3A, 5A, 13A other amps are
too small.

In heaters, the air circulated over the heating element abstracting

heat at a rate which prevents the element from reaching the
temperature necessary to cause it to glow. As a result, the heat
from the heater is delivered almost entirely by convection.

Equations:

Torque = Power/ = 19000/ 114.98 = 16.5 Nm

=2F
= 2 x rps
=2 x 18.3
=114.98

Rotational Velocity = x radius

= 114.98 x 0.09
= 10.3 rads
Electrical Efficiency = Power out/ Power in x 100
= (1900/ 3250) x 100
= 58.5%

Electricity = 0.1428 / KWH

Product is heated for one hour 3600s
Power usage = 2000W = 2KW
0.1428/3600 = 0.00003967 x 3600 x 2 = 0.2856
Total electricity cost = 0.29

Energy consumption
2000 (W) x 3600 (S) = 7200,000J
= 7200KJ

Convection:
The plastic casing around the fan are used to
force-feed air in order to generate air flow in the
direction of the rotation of the fan.
Since air flows along the axis of rotation, the
structure is kept compact. Capable of generating a
large air flow, the air is then passed over the
heating unit that turns the fan into a heater.

Electromagnets:
The mechanism of a fan uses electromagnetic induction,
which keeps it rotating on and on and thus making the
blade hub of the fan to rotate, blowing air. Electromagnetic
induction is the production of an electromotive force across
a conductor when it is exposed to a varying magnetic field.

Circuit Diagram of fan heater: Shows that circuit can be cut both manually and by the
thermostat. Also included would be positive, neutral and earth wires in the circuit.
The thermal protection stops the system overheating and becoming dangerous to the
user. The motor is connected to the fan which allows it to rotate, while the pilot light
shows the user that the system is active.

Design Flaws:

The product only has 58.5% efficiency which means that 41.5% of the inputted energy is
being lost. The is mainly through sound energy and the heating up and cooling of
components. The cost of running this product is not economically effective which means
this area of the product needs improvement. Halogen heaters cost less to run than fan
heater due to the use of halogen elements rather than electric coils, less energy to heat
up. Improvements: Allow the product to rotate on a base so it heats a room more
effectively.
Dysons AM05:
More developed heaters are helping reducing heating costs with a reduced
2kw maximum energy consumption and
33 per cent more output performance. Making them more cost effective
They work more efficiently by air being passed across an airfoil-shaped
ramp allowing the unit to offer improved output that is not diminished by
buffeting, gaps in airflow or fluctuations in temperature. It multiplies the
amount of air traveling round the fan compared to other fan heaters.
They also turns itself off once it senses rooms are at the optimum
temperature so there is no wasted energy
