CIVE 6350: Adv Mechanics of Material

March 12, 2015

Homework No. 8

1. Prob. 4.9. (10 pts)

2. Prob. 4.10. (10 pts)
3. Prob. 4.11. (10 pts)
4. Prob. 4.13. (10 pts)

The background materials for the next four problems are not explicitly covered in lecture.
Nevertheless, you should be able to solve them, if you follow loading and unloading stages, one
step at a time. At the end, you will be able to see a process in which residual stresses are
produced. (One interesting phenomenon of residual stresses is that they must be selfequilibrated. In other words, the sum of residual stresses over the cross section and the moment
of these stresses about any arbitrary point must be zero. This is because residual stresses must
exist in the absence of any external load. You may check your solutions to see if they satisfy this
condition.) Assume an elastic-perfectly plastic material in all problems, unless otherwise noted
in the text.
5. Prob. 4.15.

(10 pts)

6. Prob. 4.16.

Find the residual stress distribution through the depth and present it graphically.

(20 pts)
7. Prob. 4.17.

(10 pts)

8. Prob. 4.18.

This problem is considerably different from Prob. 4.16, and may be challenging for

many of you. The location of the plastic neutral axis is different from that of the elastic neutral
axis in this beam. As a result, the neutral axis shifts downward during the unloading phase. This
shifting in turn produces part of the cross section that remains plastic, without any change of
stress, and makes this part of the cross section ineffective. In other words, the effective cross
sectional area during the unloading stage is not the entire cross section. The first task in this
stage of the analysis is, therefore, to find the effective cross sectional area. The next task is then
to find out how this reduced cross section will affect the stress distribution over the depth of the

beam. As an end product of the solution, find the residual stress distribution through the depth
of the beam and present it graphically. (80 pts)
I advise you to approach this problem as a short independent research project and to
be prepared to spend at least one full evening for this problem alone.
