Yeast Lab Directions

In this lab, you will be investigating the effect of a particular variable on the rate and/or amount
of cellular respiration. In your lab group, you will formulate a hypothesis and devise your own
experimental procedure. You may use any of the materials and equipment available in the
classroom. Once you have your procedure, please check with me (I will only check whether or
not the experiment is safethis is not a guarantee that your experiment will work). You will
get a chance to modify your procedure after the first trial.
After you conduct your experiment, please write a lab report. Each person is responsible for
turning in a lab report (you will have the same hypothesis, materials, procedure, and data as your
group mates but you must write everything else by yourself).
Please include the following in your lab report:
1. Background (The functions of aerobic cellular respiration and fermentation, and the
difference(s) between the two. Talk about which one you think yeast cells went through, and
why.)
2. Hypothesis (make sure the "because..." part is not just a rephrasing of the "if...then..." part)
3. Materials
4. Procedure (Be specific. Make sure anyone can repeat your experiment and duplicate the
results)
5. Data (raw data only)
6. Data Analysis (processed data-- you should have some kind of graph)
7. Conclusion (Talk about whether or not your hypothesis was supported, what further
investigations you can do. If you changed your procedure between the first and second try, detail
what you changed. If the second try still didn't quite work, explain why.)
