Meeting

with specialists about 1st grade 12/3/14

Attendance: Specialist teachers, admin team
Problem: 1st grade has some challenging behaviors that are preventing learning for some students
Concerns:

Teacher A Teacher E had an idea of having the kids go to PE more often; we decided we still
wanted to see them in all specialists; came up with the solution of putting kids in different
groups; trying to think of ways to get more support for these students; talked to homeroom
teachers
o Informal meeting with teachers
o Thought about sitting down with first grade team to brainstorm possible solutions but
havent
Admin we understand that the high level behaviors you are dealing with are not normal
classroom behavior. We deal with these everyday.
Recap
o Bad behavior
o Want to regroup for 12 high flyers
Remove 6 kids from Teacher Cs class that are preventing learning for the rest
o In music, we need to all be doing the same thing
o Its not like we can just keep doing
Teacher B cant comment on Teacher Cs class I miss so many Fridays; all the other
classrooms do leveled reading and math; can we level for specialists?
o If theyre in a smaller group, can we be more effective with the curriculum if were
approaching them at their level
Differentiation
Teacher A Student X has someone with him most of the day; AE X is there in the morning;
Teacher A works with him one-on-one
o How do we support Student X?

Could Student X check in with Teacher C

Teacher D- Student X is the one that sets off the behavior; I didnt realize this until
Issue with the list of 12 all black or brown students; students will have no positive role models
in the group

Adult issue means we need to change the strategies we change with our students; the students arent
going to change
Possible solutions:

AE X can come to

Specialists, as a team, need to meet with parents of the high flyer students
o Admin I would have expected this to have happened before this plan was created
Its your job to call parents to let them know about problems
Check in with Social worker; share information, ask questions
Interventions
o We dont know interventions in other settings
o Biggest issue = transitioning
o Can Social worker communicate these interventions were trying with specialists?
o When the teacher drops of the kids they should have a folder with the students and
their interventions
If you need time to meet with a teacher, we can pay for extra prep time for you to meet with
them
Relationship building with kids give up time to build a relationship with a student; have lunch
with a student; spend a prep shooting baskets with Student X, etc.

Solutions:

AE X to Teacher Cs prep schedule

Folder with kids and interventions and any notes about behavior from the day
Work on building relationships with kids
Observe in other teachers rooms to see whats working
Meet with teachers about the 12 students
