Chapter1:AnimalTesting
Humans have many luxurieswe take a lot of them for granted. Especially
when you wouldnt have those things without millions of animals being abused and
tested on for that product. We could all do without shampoo for the cause of animals.
Save them, because they would save you.
Animal testing goes on around the world, some are for it, and some are against.
Scientists test animals for different things,
cosmetics
, medical cures, and household
items. Most causes to end animal testing are in favor of getting rid of cosmetic tests.
Companies don't want to send their products out until they know for sure that it will
work. So they capture poor animals from their families in the wild and use them
against their will.
Different animals are used for different reasons. Animals react differently
to
chemicals
than we doso sometimes it's a waste to even test at all.
Rodents
like
rats and mice are used a lot in tests. So are rabbits, frogs, and monkeyswho share
98% of the same
genetic
makeup as humans. But others are tested too. Dogs and cats
are taken from shelters and even homes to be tested and killed in labs, never seeing
their families again.
People are standing up to this harsh way of creating an
impactful
product.
Because if those people are killing animals in the making, then it really isnt impactful.
But most are fighting. New Zealand, Australia, Canada, U.S.A., South Korea, Brazil and
Taiwan all have over 62% of their countries against animal testing (in order greatest to
least of percents). But the European Union, Israel and India have already banned
animals from being tested for cosmetics and have banned newly animal-tested
cosmetics. But the rest of the world hasnt wanted change. This is cruel, harsh and
unfair to these poor animals. Let's make a stand against animal testing.

Chapter2:TypesofTests

MedicalTests
Animals are being tested todayand probably right now as youre reading this.
For stupid reasons that may not make a change in the world at all. But there are
medical cures out there that wouldnt be, unless scientists had tested first. But some
scientists test without knowing that animals dont react to chemicals as we do, so all of
those dead animals couldve been for a waste. Medical treatments are
necessaryand unlike cosmetics, they make a difference.

Tests Done On Animals

Eye Irritancy:
John H. Draize developed the Draize eye test to be done on
rabbits
in 1944.
Acute Toxicity/Inhalation Exposure:
Rats and mice
are used here to help skin
exposure.
Repeated Dose Toxicity:
This is tested on
dogs
because rodents dont react the
same way to the chemicals as we do.
Skin Corrosivity/Irritation:
John H. Draize also developed the Draize skin test
which is also done on
rabbits
.
Skin Sensitization:
This is done on
guinea pigs
.
Pharmacokinetics/Toxicokinetics and Metabolism:
Rats and Mice
are given
doses of certain chemicals (this is the case for a lot of tests).
Dermal Penetration:
Rats
are tested (given chemicals), killed and examined.
Mutagenicity:
After testing and death, bone marrow from
rats and mice
are
taken and examined.
Carcinogenicity:
Here, chemicals are administered on
rats and mice
skin and
examined.
Reproductive and Developmental Toxicity:
This is also a test where chemicals
are administered on
rats and mice
skin.
Neurotoxicity:
A single dose of a chemical is administered on
hens or rats
. They
are then examined for 21 days.
Ecotoxicity:
Chronic Test:
This test is where
fish
are examined in their environment
with a certain chemical for 200 days!
96L50 Test:
This is very similar to the chronic test but it is only done for
96 hours on
fish
.

Pyrogenicity:
Where
rabbits
get chemicals injected into their skin for
examination.

CosmeticTests
Tons of companies use animals as test subjects, throughout all departments;
cosmetic, medical, and household. But maybe the least useful and important of all is
cosmetics. They are not necessary, they are for our pleasure. In the long run it's really a
choice, kill an animal or give up makeup.

Famous cosmetic
brands

that test on animals:

Maybelline
Cover Girl
L'Oreal
Neutrogena
Dove
Revlon
Dawn
Axe
Aveeno
Este Lauder
TRESemm
Chanel

HouseholdTests
Tissues, laundry detergent, tape. Animals are taken away from their families so
companies can give us that. We don't need these things that muchand they're
useless if thousands of animals die in the making.

Famous household brands that test on animals:

Windex
Glade
Splenda
Tide
Post-It
Lysol
Crest
Vaseline
Scotch
Clorox
Kleenex
Bounty
Arm & Hammer
Coppertone
Raid
Mead
Huggies
Dawn

Chapter3:WhataretheAnimalsTestedOn?

Animals are living, breathing, moving things; like us. So why are we doing these
harsh things to animals. Not just ratsbut animals from bunnies and monkeys to dogs
and cats. Living their lives in cages being tested rather than living their lives in the wild.

Rats and Mice

Rats and mice are used a lot because they have similar organ structure and
other
internal
body parts are similar; except for the size of course. More than 100
million rats and mice lose their lives in U.S. labs every year! Dont believe it, huh? The
sad part is, theres no law saying that these heartless scientists cant do it. Rats are
dissected
(like frogs) across the world. I wouldnt want to be a rat!

Frogs
Some kids are fascinated by the fact that they get to cut open a dead frog. Not
very cool. Frogs die by the thousands every year in dissection, some are even bred for
dissection! Frogs are a big part of every ecosystem as well, they balance the insect
population by eating bugs. But the population rises when frogs are taken for tests.
Insects grow in population which then leads to them being poisoned which is bad for
the bugs and the environment. Frogs are more helpful than you think.
Bunnies/Rabbits
"More than 241,000 bunnies are abused in U.S. labs every year" (according to
PETA Kids). You may think of bunnies as cute, furry and innocent animals, you'd be
right. They do nothing but mind their own business, and what do they get? They're kept
in small cages, never seeing sunlight again. And usually bunnies are tested until they
are killed. And you have no idea what these animals go through; dishwashing liquid
and drain cleaner gets dripped into their eyes. And damaging chemicals get applied to
their soft skin. Hundreds of thousands of bunnies die in labs every year.

Monkeys
You may think, why monkeys? Why do they have to test on monkeys? Well,
humans and monkeys share 98% of the same genes. "More than 125,000 monkeys are
kept in U.S. laboratories every year. These monkeys are treated horribly getting tubes
8

shoved up their noses and in their mouths and stomachs. If they are lucky they will get
a plastic toy or an apple slice to keep them company in their cramped cages. They are
truly alone.
Other animals are tested too like; dogs, cats or fish. Dogs and cats are stolen
from shelters or even homes! Cats are also dissected like frogs and fish are tested
usually in their habitat. Animals are tested all over the world, it's cruel and most of the
time illegal. It has to be stopped.

Chapter4:Who'sHelping?

Animal
testing is a
worldwide
problem. Many
nations still allow
testing and
products that have
been tested
because they
haven't passed a
law yet. But most
countries, want
change. According
to HSI, the
Humane Society
International: 88%
of New Zealand, 81% of Canada, 81% of Australia, 73% of the United States, 70% of
South Korea, 66% of Brazil and 62% of Taiwan want a ban. And others want change
but not over 50% like; Russia, Japan and China. And the rest either don't test on
animals or have already passed a law. India, the U.K., and Israel have already passed a
law. This problem is being dealt with all around the world.

Australia
Making a petition to force the government to nationally ban cosmetic tests on animals.

Brazil
So Paulo banned cosmetic tests in January 2014. But a national ban is under
discussion.

Canada
Working to amend Canadas Food and Drugs Act to ban cosmetic testing on animals.

China
Has changed requirements for cosmetic manufacturers in China and is working to
extend to foreign imports as well.

10

India
Banned cosmetic tests in June 2013 and import ban in November 2014.

Japan
Arguing with government on national ban.

New Zealand
Pushing for a cosmetics testing ban and change to New Zealands Animal Welfare Act.

Russia
Government accepts non-animal methods.

South Korea
$155 dollar government commitment to build alternative testing center, in search of a
new method.

Taiwan
Working with politicians for a national legislation to end cosmetics tests.

United States
Leading efforts support ban on animal tested products being imported and cosmetics
tests in general.

Chapter5:HowdoyouHelp?
As you have probably learnedanimal testing is cruel and harsh to animals. But
there are ways to help. Many people are standing up to the harsh methods companies
use to test their products, now you can too.

Ways to Help

Go Vegan
Buy Cruelty-Free Products
Don't Support Animals In Entertainment (circuses, zoos or movies)
Stay Involved
Volunteer At Animal Shelters
Avoid Dissection
Pledge To Be Fur-Free
Spread The Word

Conclusion
Animals around the world are burned, poisoned and torturedand for what?
For deodorant or shampoo. Millions of poor and innocent animals die every year for us
to have shampoo? We can do something about it! In fact, it's not just the U.S. that's
making a stand. Countries around the world are fighting for the animals' freedom. And
now that you've read this you know what kinds of testing there is. What animals are
tested. Who's helping. And most importantly, how to help.
Imagine
if you were living
with your
family in a happy
life. When
suddenly, you are
taken by
strangers never to
see your family
or your old life ever
again. You'd be
sad and alone. But
not only would
you be taken from
your family.
You'd be tortured,
burned,
poisoned and
abused. Your life would be horrible. This happens to millions of animals across the
world. It's time to stand up to these harsh waysfor the animals.
