The official language of instruction at Ghent University is Dutch. However, a growing number of courses is taught in English.
Please check the online course catalogue to find out in which language of instruction the course you want to register for is
taught in, see: http://www.ugent.be/en/teaching/coursecatalogue)
As not all incoming students have a sufficient knowledge of Dutch at the start of their study, Ghent University requires a good
knowledge of English (B2 level) in order to communicate and function in an academic context.
Therefore, all incoming exchange students with exception of Erasmus Belgica students (= Belgian exchange programme)
have to submit one of the following documents:
A recent TOEFL Certificate: minimum score: 510-559 points (Paper-based) or 87-109 points (Internet-based).
Or a recent IELTS Certificate: minimum score: 6.0
Or a recent Certificate of a University Language Centre testifying that the student masters the necessary
knowledge of English or Dutch to function academically (CEF-level B2!)
Or a proof that the student finished successfully an English or Dutch study programme of at least 1 year
Or a proof that the student is a native speaker (Dutch or English)
Important:
For students who are applying for the faculty of Bio Science Engineering, see the specific language requirements
