Jamestown + 1607: 3 ships brought 120 colonists to the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. + They sailed up the James River, which they named after King James. The indentured servants worked for 5 to 7 years to repay their passage and then they were freed.
+ Many died because of disease and overwork. Many other slaves
were brought to Virginia during this time. + In 1614, John Rolfe and Pocahontas (Chief Powhatans daughter) were married which brought peace between the Indians and the Settlers. + In 1619, the Dutch sent 20 captive Africans on a ship to trade them for supplies. After working as indentured servants they became farmers and planters. + Colonists eventually needed more workers so they enslaved the African arrivals and forced them to work on large farms and plantations.
