Lesson Title: So Many Shapes!

Curriculum Area: Mathematics

Grade Level/Cooperating Teacher: 4/Finnegin

Date: November 18, 2014
Estimated Time: 15 minutes

Standards Connection:
M. ES 2.4 Identify circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.

Learning Objectives:
Students will pick what shape does not belong on an elimination worksheet in 2/2 attempts.

Evaluation of Learning Objective(s):

The students will complete a worksheet that requires them to look at four shapes and determine
which does not belong.

Engagement:
Hi boys! Today we are going have some fun during Touch Math with shapes! Shapes are all
around us. I have some friends who went on an adventure to find shapes in the world around
them. Lets watch this video to see what they found! Wow! They found a lot of circles, squares,
triangles, and rectangles! We are going to work together today to see if we can learn how to
identify circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.

Learning Design:
Teaching:
Today we are going to learn what circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles look like, and you
are going to be able to identify them after we finish.
Lets start with circles. This is a circle. Lets look at it. What do you see when you look at the
circle? Well I see that the circle is rounded all the way around. There are no corners on a circle.
Circles can come in many different sizes. These are all circles. M, can you point to a circle? Z
and J, what is this shape? Good work!
Now lets move onto squares. This is a square. Lets look at it. What do you see when you look at
the square? I see that the square has four corners and four sides. Count them with me. I also see
that all of the sides are the same size. These are four different squares. Each one is a different
size and color, but they are all squares because they have four corners and four sides that are the
same length. M, will you point to a square? Z, what is this shape? J, what shape is this?
Lets move on to rectangles. This is a rectangle. Lets look at it very closely. What do you see
when you look at the rectangle? Well I see that the four sides and four corners. Count them with
me. So a rectangle has the same number of sides and corners as a square. SO how can we tell the
difference? Well, lets look very closely at the rectangle. We said that the sides on squares are all
the same size, but are all the sides on a rectangle the same size? No! Two sides are longer and
two sides are shorter. Lets look at these rectangles and find the short and long sides.. M, can you
point to a rectangle? Z and J, shape is this?
We have one more shape to talk about today! This is a triangle. Lets look at it. What do you see
when you look at the triangle? I see that the triangle has three sides and three points where the

sides come together. Lets count the sides. Now lets come the points where the sides meet. Count
with me. These are all triangles. M, can you point to a triangle? Z and J, shape is this?
Wow! We just learned all about four shapes!

Practice:
Ok boys, now that we have learned about all of the shapes we are going to practice identifying
the shapes together several times. During this activity, the instructor will present shapes to the
students and they will identify the shapes by pointing or saying the shape. Students will then be
presented with two different shapes and asked to pick the correct shape. Finally, the students will
be presented with a larger group of shapes and asked to identify which does not belong.

Assessment:
That was great practice! Now we are going to use our Tough Math worksheets so that you can
show me what you learned during this activity. On each row, you are going to put a big X over
the shape that does not fit or is different from all the others. Does everyone understand?

Closure:
M, Z, and J, I am so proud of you guys for working hard this morning and learning all about
circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles! If you look closely, you will shapes all around you
throughout the day!

Materials and Resources:

Computer
Podcast
Shape cut outs and manipulatives
Touch Math Worksheet
Crayons

Differentiation:
M- Throughout the lesson, M will point whenever participating in practice or answering a
question.
Z- Z will practice using spoken language to communicate responses and answers throughout the
lesson.
J- If J is able to quickly pick up on identifying the shapes, I will ask him to practice drawing his
own shapes instead of only identifying.
