Essentials of Teaching

EDU410
Nathan McFarland
Warm Up: Imagine you are about to start a class.
Students are chatty, talkative, and some even
late. Think about the law of readiness. Think
about how you might speak to them.
What would you do to get them READY to learn?

Imagineyour next
teaching experience
Think about the END of class

What do you hope they know?

What do you hope theyve done?

How do you hope they have felt?

What did you SPARK in them?

The role of the Teacher is to facilitate learning.

Take a moment and find a

Teaching and Dieting

What are some ways that might I be

Some draw the target AFTER they shoot

their arrow

THE END IN MIND

Set the target first, by prayer and preparation, then aim for
success. Targeted objectives help me evaluate instruction.

What do I hope you will know? (1)Instructional Modeling is

Intentional Modeling. (2) Teachers model Behavior, Thinking, and
Error. (3) Modeling presents students with a real example, which
is attainable.

What do I hope you will have done? Modeling Activities.

How do I hope you have felt? (1) IMPORTANCE in your actions;

(2) NEEDED in your calling; (3) CHALLENGED to imitate Christ.

What did I SPARK in you? The DESIRE to model behavior,

thinking, and error for those whom you teach.

As you read 1 Cor 10:23-11:1

How does Paul value
personal liberty
in light of
modeling Christ-likeness
to the weak?

1 Corinthians 10:23 - 11:1

All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful, but not
all things build up. Let no one seek his own good, but the good of his neighbor. Eat
whatever is sold in the meat market without raising any question on the ground of
conscience. For the earth is the Lord 's, and the fullness thereof. If one of the
unbelievers invites you to dinner and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set
before you without raising any question on the ground of conscience. But if
someone says to you, This has been offered in sacrifice, then do not eat it, for the
sake of the one who informed you, and for the sake of conscience I do not mean
your conscience, but his. For why should my liberty be determined by someone
else' s conscience? If I partake with thankfulness, why am I denounced because of
that for which I give thanks?

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Give no
offense to Jews or to Greeks or to the church of God, just as I try to please everyone
in everything I do, not seeking my own advantage, but that of many, that they may
be saved.

Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.

In other words, Model me, as I model Christ.

Classroom Tips

Model that which is difficult for students

(activities, behaviors, etc).

Model ways to resolve conflict.

Model how you interact with a text.

Model using Think-Alouds.

Activity: With a partner.

Modeling Activity: Think of a time in your classroom

experience where the students needed to navigate conflict
(fighting, arguing, passive-aggression, personal conflict, etc).
List 3 strategies that you would use AS THE TEACHER to
help MODEL a resolution to the conflict.

Modeling Activity: Read the parable in Matthew 15:1-20 (lips

and heart). With your neighbor, write down 3 things that you
can do to MODEL how you interact with in the text.
