As I looked back over my goals at the beginning of the year I feel that I am at about

50/50 with having actually accomplished them. I also realized that I was not as specific as I
could have been. However, I feel that with how little we actually knew about the event at the
start of the semester, I really could not have given any definite specifics. There were simply too
many details we didnt have, including the actual date of the event. Going back over the goals I
set I can see how some of them I was able to accomplish, and others how I can give more detail
as to how and when I will be able to achieve them.

how to improve my description skills.

For the Skills portion, I have watched to see how well people understand me as we are
communicating. Generally this semester when I have asked for feedback, I received the response
of oh it was fine from most people. But as I have persisted, and shown that I really do want to
know how well I am doing and where they feel I need improvement, I have gotten more
suggestions including the need to increase my vocabulary, and also suggestions on signs that are
more fitting than the one I chose. With the first Skills goal I will keep it for this next semester,
while the second one is kind of a given that I will be signing with participants so I will find a
more appropriate goal to work towards.

confirmation or correction.
This semester I have gotten bolder at asking people what a particular sign mean, or
asking if I understand what it means correctly. Most of the Deaf people that I ask for clarification

from are happy to explain, and seem rather pleased that instead of pretending I knew what they
were saying I straight up said I was confused and required further explanation. Although this has
helped me increase my vocabulary and interactions with Deaf people, I will try to add more
specifics to work on. As for the second Knowledge goal, I didnt do it. I kept getting sidetracked
by other responsibilities and never looked for more information than we were given during out
meetings with Ayas. I still feel that it is an important goal so I will keep it, but set a time to have
the information by.
Self-Awareness

Watch how my interactions are

and execution of the event.

Since at the time I originally wrote this it was still unclear what we would actually be
doing, and what kind of interactions we would have, I wasnt certain how to phrase this first
Self-Awareness goal. I have attempted to be culturally sensitive while we have been in the
planning stages, but now that we have more information I should be able to clarify just how I
will accomplish this goal. For the second goal, as stated earlier, I didnt do it. And again, I still
see its importance so I will need to set a time frame that I can stick to in order to hold myself
accountable.
Professional
Involvement

Meet the people who make these kinds

of events possible so that I have
connections for future events.

Now that I have a better idea what we are doing for the service learning project, I can be
more specific with this goal. Previously I had no idea what do put for this area because I had no
experience in a service project this big. Now that I have a better idea I can create goals that are
more suited for my Professional Involvement. I have been meeting people who are planning the

event, and I have learned from them already. I also am getting a better idea of what it takes to
plan an event on this scale.
For my new set of goals I will be able to take what I have learned this semester and put it
towards my goals for the summer. Some were very similar, but most I modified quite a bit,
mostly due to the fact that I had considerably more information to work with. Because I was able
to be more specific I feel that these goals are more obtainable than my previous goals and they fit
better with the events we intend to participate in over the summer semester.
In all the categories I was able to be more specific about which skills I want to improve
which will increase my ability to complete them. Keeping it realistic in expectations and a time
frame Ill be able to accomplish these skill improvements. By increasing my Skills and
Knowledge, then as I continue in the interpreting program I will be better at completing
homework and improve the level at which I transfer the message between languages. Focusing
on Self-Awareness and Professional Connections while working with Sego Lily Center for the
Deaf Abused not only gives me actual opportunity to improve in a real-world situation, but also
help me develop skills to use as an interpreter including planning large events and how to work
with sponsors from different companies.
