Teacher Candidate: Jessica Stone
Name of Lesson: Subtraction Bowling
Subject: Math

Grade: K/1

Rationale for lesson: The purpose of this lesson is to practice subtraction

from 10 with the hands-on activity of bowling.
Learning outcomes: The students will be able to bowl 10 rounds and
correctly subtract the pins knocked down from the original 10 pins and find
the number of pins left standing (which should correspond with the actual
pins they left standing).
Assessment of student outcomes: Visual observation and completion of
worksheet

Count, recognize, represent, name, and order a number of objects (up to 10).
Model subtraction by removing objects from sets (for numbers less than 10).
Show the meaning of subtraction (taking away, comparing, finding the difference) using objects.
Write and solve number sentences from problem situations involving addition and subtraction.

Materials Needed: Worksheets, pencils, miniature bowling sets.

Lesson/Activity Presentation:
Anticipatory set: I will begin by asking the group if they have ever
been bowling and ask them if they understand how the game works the
number of pins you knock down is your score.

Teaching procedures: First I will describe the game of bowling and

how it works. Next I will explain the bowling game we will be playing. I will
make the first roll for the children and we will complete the first line on the
worksheet as a group. Then children will break into groups of 2 and take
turns rolling an additional 9 times each to complete the worksheet.
Guided & independent practice: Once the first roll is completed,
the children will work in groups, sharing one bowling set, to complete their
worksheets.
Closure: We will join back up as a group to look over our results. I may
add (or have the children add) the total number of pins they knocked down
in 10 rounds and see who knocked down the most.
Differentiated instruction: Children will be grouped based on ability,
stronger with weaker. I will work one-on-one with children that are struggling.
Multicultural instruction (if appropriate):
Technology (if appropriate):
Reflection on lesson: The students really liked this activity, so much so
that they asked to play it again later in the day. There were some issues with
setting up the pins, because of their size and lack of familiarity with a
bowling pin triangle set up. When I played the game later with the students,
we used a large dry erase board and I drew dots in the form of a triangle for
the students to use as a base to set up the pins. The students also tried
different pin set ups, to see if the pins were easier or harder to knock down.
I think the activity was a success.
