Math

Week of:
March 17

Standard: 3.MD.A.1. Tell and write time to the nearest minute and measure time
intervals in minutes. Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time
intervals in minutes, e.g., by representing the problem on a number line diagram.
4.MD.A.2: Use the four operations to solve word problems involving distances, intervals
of time, liquid volumes, masses of objects, and money, including problems involving
simple fractions or decimals, and problems that require expressing measurements given
in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Represent measurement quantities using
diagrams such as number line diagrams that feature a measurement scale.
3.MD.B.4: Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with
halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal
scale is marked off in appropriate units whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
4.MD.A.1: Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units
including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of
measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record
measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times
as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table
for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ...
5.MD.A.1: Convert among different-sized standard measurement units within a given
measurement system (e.g., convert 5 cm to 0.05 m), and use these conversions in solving
multi-step, real world problems.
EQ: How does what we measure influence how we measure?

Tuesday

Activities: The students will do a clock foldable together to use and keep as a reference
and as a guide. The teacher will ask the students questions to determine the students
prior knowledge on clocks and timing. The students will use the clock to answer
questions such as show me on the clock whereis.
The students and the teacher will discuss the clock patterns. The students and the teacher
will work on finding the time to the nearest minute by using scenarios and timelines.
The teacher will discuss elapsed time and work use the website:
http://www.shodor.org/interactivate/activities/ElapsedTime/ to do so. The students will
participate in this activity by coming up to the board.
Assessment: The clock, timelines, and the computer activity.

Math
Wednesday

Activities: The teacher will review the information learned the day before. If the students
have not talked about elapsed time the teacher will begin by focusing on it. The teacher
will move on to adding and subtracting time using word problems.
The students will use a number line to help solve the word problems as well as drawing a
picture, a diagram, and by using their clocks they made the day before.
In the big fat math workbook the students will do pages 407-408. The teacher and the
students will discuss the answers.
In the skinny math workbook the students will do pages P201-P202. The students and the
teacher will discuss the answers.
Assessment: Mid-Chapter checkpoint pp. 409-410

Thursday

Activities: The students will start their Measurement Lapbooks. They will color and talk
about the sections of measurement. The students will do the cover of the lapbook, the
Customary Length and the Inch Ruler parts of the Lapbook.
The teacher will handout rulers and have the students observe the rulers and discuss what
all of the different lines mean on the ruler on the inches side.
The teacher will have the students fill out a worksheet and measure objects and floor
tiles all around the room.
Assessment: The students participation and neatness on the lapbooks.

Friday

Activities: The students will do the Metric Length and the Centimeter Ruler in the
lapbook. The teacher and the students will discuss each of the lines on the centimeter
side.
The teacher will have the students measure the same objects the students measured the
day before and compare the inches and centimeters length. The teacher and the students
will have a discussion what they found.
Assessment: The students will do pages 411-414 in their big fat math workbooks.
