Dakota Sioux War

After a severe winter the Sioux nation eagerly awaited the

governments yearly payment they were near the point of
starvation
One trader told the Indians they could eat grass this was a
very inhuman way to talk to starving people
On August 17, 1862 a party of Sioux hunters stopped at a
white settlers cabins and murdered five people this blood
shed angered the white settlers witch began the war
Before the war ended it is estimated that about 600 people
were killed
307 Indians were sentenced to death
One white man spoke up and stated that the white men were
to blame for the Sioux outbreak he was Bishop Whipple
After careful examination President Lincoln decided that the
most of the Indians sentenced to death had been in battle so
only 38 of them were hung at Mankato on December 26,
1862
This was the largest mass hanging in the United States
history
Mr. Henry Sibley our first state governor also stated that the
uprising was caused by the stored-up anger that the Indians
experienced due to the constant breaking of promises by our
government
