2015 Placements
I loved meeting new clients, being exposed to different businesses, learning every
day and continuously having to grow and mature as a person. The internship
experience is great for taking away everything you learn at college and putting it to
use in a real life practical environment.

Internships
Introduction
Graduates who are successful in getting better jobs recognise that employers not only check their academic
record to verify quality knowledge but also their relevant work experience for appropriate skills. Whilst Internship
Placements are a mandatory requirement for the completion of all degree and diploma courses at Macleay
College, it is important to recognise that they allow you to acquire the experience and skills essential to acquiring
a satisfying job upon graduation. Internship Placements are now offered in almost every career area by
employers who recognise the importance of on-the-job training, and who often train their most promising
candidates for full-time positions post-graduation.
The purpose of this handbook is to assist you in getting the most out of your internship experience. To do this, you
need to understand exactly what constitutes an internship, the benefits of an internship, and the process around
securing and completing a successful placement. There are responsibilities to understand and carry out, as well
as the various assessment tasks which are critical to the completion of the Internship Unit within your course.
What is an Internship?
An internship is a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with
practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Internships give students the opportunity
to gain valuable applied experience and make connections in professional fields they are considering for career
paths; and give employers the opportunity to guide and evaluate talent.
Internships can be paid or unpaid opportunities.
The components of a successful internship experience include:
An agreed beginning and end and includes a position description with desired skills and experience
Clearly defined learning objectives and goals related to the professional goals of the students coursework
Supervision by a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in the field of
the experience
Work experience or work shadowing where students do not perform work for the organisation, but simply
observe a profession for a brief period to learn about the practical aspects of a possible career
Work undertaken by students to finance their studies unrelated to the pursuit of a professional career
Volunteer work where the student is simply performing a task/s that would otherwise be filled by another
employee or volunteer
Work performed solely and remotely with no face-to-face contact such as remote blogging or social media
management
Although the college does not classify these experiences as internships, it does agree that they can be valuable
both to employers and for individuals professional and skills development, subject to individual circumstances.

Types of Internships
Elite Internships. An elite internship is one that offers a Student an amazing opportunity to experience a high
profile workplace that is recognised as being one of the best in their field. These are likely to be quite
competitive amongst students. Only Students with distinction average or higher will be considered for these.
Standard Internships. All other internships that meet the key objectives outlined in the Introduction Section
of this Handbook.
Volunteer Positions. Volunteer positions are placements where the student is simply performing a task/s
that would otherwise be filled by another employee or volunteer, not necessarily a student undertaking a
particular course of study. Provides limited learning opportunities.
Benefits of Internship
Well-managed, high-quality internships should be beneficial to both the Host Organisation and the Student. The
Student should develop professional skills and an understanding of a profession by undertaking work of value for
the Host Organisation, enhancing their future employability and creating a new, highly-talented future workforce.
In addition, Host Organisations can use internship programs to directly identify and recruit motivated and capable
individuals.
The benefits described in this section relate specifically to the Student.
Gaining work experience and transferable skills looks good on your resume!
Students all have their educational experience in common. However students who also have the relevant work
experiences by the time they graduate become far more attractive to prospective employers. Having a number of
internship experiences will show that you are keen to gain employment in the industry and will also indicate to
employers that you have the right skills and enough experience to take on a permanent paid position. In addition
to the specialised skills of your field, transferable skills are generally required at any job, eg. communication,
interpersonal skills, computer proficiency, and team work.
You start understanding everything so much easier when youre working and doing all the practical work instead of
just theory. Youre also able to make so many connections and open up different opportunities just by being there
and showing youre passionate and determined.
PRISCILLA LEE I 2014 Marketing Management, Real Estate Graduate, interned Belle Properties
Work experience will open the right career opportunities and attract employers
Internship Placements can help you decide if a particular career path or area is or isnt for you, and narrow down
the (often long) list of careers or employers that you are interested in to find one that you will be happy in. If you
dont enjoy your internship experience then, at the very least, it will have helped you to determine that a particular
area isnt for you. Dont give up, you can always try another internship in a different organisation or role and see if
you like it any better. Every experience helps you to define and redirect your career path.
The best way to learn is by doing. You can learn a lot by researching, and writing essays but the best way to learn
and gain experience is by going out into the industry and getting a taste of how it is in the real world.

Network with professionals in your field, for references and future job opportunities
Its all about who you know. As a student intern, you are surrounded by professionals in the industry in which you
wish to work. Its more than just about getting a grade, this is an opportunity to learn from everyone around you,
ask questions, and impress them with your eagerness. These people can be your future colleagues or can be the
connection to your first job.
I completed an internship at Soap Creative where one of the Macleay advertising lecturers works. They ended up hiring
me, so Id be lying if I said Id be at Soap right now without Macleay.

Securing an Internship
It is never too early to start planning for an internship!
The best time to begin the process is early in the trimester before the trimester in which
you wish to be an intern
This is important because finding a really great internship takes time and you want to be able to devote the
appropriate amount of time to avoid feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
Advertised by Macleay College on the Student Zone Noticeboard these will also be emailed direct to all
relevant students via their my.macleay email address, and or presented to you during one of your faculty
lectures
Identified by one of your lecturers, that they feel is suitable for you
Made available via a family member or friend that works in the industry
Advertised to general public via a variety of websites including job seeking sites, industry associations,
specific organisations websites
If the Internship has not been advertised internally then it is important to first confirm that the opportunity
qualifies as an Internship and is appropriate for you given your course of study. To do this, contact your
Internship Coordinator with relevant details. The Internship Coordinator will confirm back to you eligibility and
can also assist in the application process and required documentation.
Should I apply?
Internships are designed to supplement classroom learning with practical experience. Therefore the following key
objectives should be kept in mind when examining whether a particular internship experience should be pursued:
The Internship Placement:
a) enables you to apply theoretical and other knowledge gained from your course of study
b) provides the opportunity to undertake activities consistent with your course objectives
c) provides an opportunity for you to explore career options or make more informed decisions regarding your
career development
d) Will be a positive experience and support your transition from study to work.
Some other things to consider when identifying prospective internship opportunities include:
Location. Assess transport option to and from, however be realistic too. You may need to travel a little
further to get your dream internship. You are responsible for ensuring you can get to and from your Internship
workplace on time and any expenses associated with the travel.
Timing. For the purpose of Macleay Colleges Internship Program, the duration of internships can vary, but
will typically last around three months depending on individual needs. A high-quality internship should be
based on a specific project or offer student exposure to the business across a variety of areas. An internship
may take place during trimester break periods, during the trimester or a combination of both.
If you are uncertain as to whether an opportunity is right for you, make a time to discuss this with either your
Internship Coordinator or our Industry Manager.
The Program Leader and the Internship Coordinator have the right, upon reviewing a potential Internship
opportunity, to reject the Internship, if it does not appear to satisfy the requirements of providing a meaningful
learning experience for the students program.
How do I apply?
Once you have determined an opportunity is one you wish to pursue, do not delay in responding. Firstly, confirm
the application requirements. These should be included as part of the advertisement or you may need to contact
the organisation for more information if the opportunity has not been advertised internally. Be mindful of the
closing date; dont miss out because you procrastinated. If in doubt, apply! It is good practise and you never
know what it may lead to.
To apply, in most instances, you will need an up to date resume, and a cover letter. It is important to ensure your
resume is completed and kept up to date once you start the process of securing an internship. Cover letters
should be tailored to the specific Internship Placement you are applying for. There will be time dedicated to
resume and cover letter writing in the first weeks of your Internship Unit. The Internship Coordinators will provide
feedback and assist you in this process too. Some Internship applications will require further criteria be met as
part of the application process, particularly Elite Internships. These will be explained as part of the application
process.
If you are short listed for the Internship, the Host Organisation will most probably want to meet with you to
conduct a short interview. It is important that you prepare for this interview appropriately and ensure you are
presenting yourself in a professional manner. Take the time to research the organisation. The interview is also a
time for you to ask any questions of the Host Organisation and clarify any details about the Internship. When
preparing, ensure you think about any questions you may have in advance. As part of the Internship Unit you will
learn how to prepare for an interview.
If successful, you will be notified by either the Host Organisation or your Internship Coordinator. It is then up to
you to ensure the documentation is completed and returned to the Internship Coordinator for final approval prior
to commencing the Placement. Specifically,
The Internship Placement Agreement (the Agreement) must be signed by yourself and a representative from
the Host Organisation
Internship Placement Summary (part of the Agreement) must be filled out. If the Internship Coordinator has
any questions relating to the Summary, or feels more clarity is required, they will contact you directly to
discuss.
This must be done PRIOR to commencing your Placement. If you need assistance with any of this please contact
your Internship Coordinator.
Learning Outcomes
Each internship experience should provide a learning experience for you, though this will vary from one
Placement to another. You may grow in academic learning, skill development or personal areas through your
internship. Each student will have a different experience however it is important to note that as with most things
in life what you get out of the Internship Placement will largely depend on what you put in. Stay focussed on your
agreed Objectives (Learning Outcomes), ask lots of questions and observe those around you. (refer to Getting the
most out of your Internship Placement, page 10)
Refer to the Internship unit outline of relevant course for the Learning Outcomes.
Ensure your Workplace Supervisor completes the On-line Evaluation Form and reviews their evaluation with
you.
Share your experience with your Internship Coordinator and your peers.
Express your appreciation for the experience to your Workplace Supervisor and others at the Host
Organisation that were supportive of you by writing a thank-you email or letter.
Ask your Workplace Supervisor if they would be a referee for you for future job applications.
There are a number of other academic assessments that students have to complete throughout the year. You
should refer to Internship unit outline of the relevant course for information on the minimum number of
placement hours and all assessment requirements.
Remuneration
Internships may be arranged as either a paid or unpaid experience. Whether or not a student is paid depends
upon the organisation and arrangements of the internship.
The majority of internships are unpaid. Unless otherwise specified in the advertisement, it should be assumed
that the internship is unpaid.
