Wondering about Wuthering
Burt, Daniel S. "Wuthering Heights." The Novel 100: A Ranking of the Most
Influential Novels
of All Time, Revised Edition. New York: Chelsea House Publishing, 2010.
Bloom's
Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.

Burts article does not offer much criticism, but more analysis and
background on Wuthering Heights and how Emily Bronts life
influenced her writing. Burt explains why Wuthering Heights became a
classic with critic reviews from the 19th century instead of his own
thoughts. When the novel was first released, it was criticized for
having little structure, but is now highly acclaimed. Burt provided
many fascinating facts about Bronts home life and influences;
however, he never added his own opinions.

While the facts on Emily Bront are interesting and captivating,

knowing Burts thoughts and opinions would be helpful. It is apparent
that because Wuthering Heights has already been made known as a

Walraven 2
masterpiece, popular and common outlooks have influenced Burts
vague and scarce opinions. Burts article was useful and helpful for
understanding the main plots and scenarios of the book, but never
truly delving deep into his own personal view of the novel.

Polhemus, Robert M. Erotic Faith: Being in Love from Jane Austen to D. H.

Lawrence
(Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1990): pp. 8183. Quoted as
"Love and Death
in Wuthering Heights" in Harold Bloom, ed. The Bronts, Bloom's Major
Novelists.
Philadelphia: Chelsea House Publishing, 1999. (Updated 2007.)
Bloom's Literature.
Facts On File, Inc. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.

Polhemuss article discusses the close relationship Emily Bront wrote

between love and death and how that relationship was a reflection of
her own life. Brontes life was full of death and Polhemus reasons that
writing about death so beautifully was a coping mechanism for her.
While Polhemus examines Bronts theme of death, he begins to go off
topic to talk about religions role in Wuthering Heights instead of the
comparisons of love and death. He discusses how religion is talked
about throughout the book by many characters, alluding to the theme

Walraven 3
of death. Polhemus believes that the novel brings up crucial and
critical issues that revolve around the time period of Bronts life.

Polhemuss review was lopsided, for he did not nearly discuss love as
much as death, and perhaps wrote more about religion and death than
love and death. Polhemus had very insightful points, speculations, and
opinions regardless of his misleading title about what the article would
be about. He provided his own reviews and thoughts in an organized
manner, creating an overall helpful criticism on Wuthering Heights.

Paddock, Lisa, and Carl Rollyson. "Bront, Emily." The Bronts A to Z: The
Essential
Reference to Their Lives and Work, Literary A to Z. New York: Facts On
File, Inc.,
2003. Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 9 Nov. 2014.

Paddock and Rollyson deliver the most evidence known about Emily
Bronte and her short life. She died very young at age 30 from
tuberculosis, had five siblings, had many of her journal entries
destroyed, was known as a tomboy character by locals, and adored
animals. She wrote much about death and her sister described that
Emily anticipated death more than she accepted it. Little is known

about Emily Bront, but it is apparent that she was a very smart,
strong-willed, and independent woman.

Paddock and Rollysons article provides deep understanding about

Emily Bronte and how her life parallels with Wuthering Heights. The
article covered the most detailed context known about Emily Bront,
making it the most helpful, insightful, and useful article for
understanding Emily Bronts life, personality, and character.

Bloom, Harold, ed. "Bront, Emily." Wuthering Heights, Bloom's Guides. New
York: Chelsea
House Publishing, 2008. Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 9
Nov. 2014.

Blooms article states more of Emily Bronts facts than of her

personality, character, or in-depth life. Emily Bronts sisters all wrote
highly acclaimed literature and all three of them went under
pseudonyms, Emilys was Ellis Bell. Wuthering Heights was never fully
understood and was thought of as morbid and violent, but after
Bronts death, its reputation of being a masterpiece grew. Uncovering
Emily Bronts life is a puzzle that has yet to be solved, she was very
young when she died and didnt leave much behind to discover.

Encyclopedia of
Themes in Literature. New York: Infobase Publishing, 2011. Bloom's
Literature. Facts

Kimber points out what everybody is thinking about Wuthering

Heights, but no one says: Catherine and Heathcliffs love for one
another was not shy of obsessions. Their love was destructive and
dangerous and pointed out all the things a too passionate and
consuming love can bring. Love in Wuthering Heights is far from how
its depicted among common knowledge. Bronts intention for her
theme of love was to shed light that too much of a good can result in
things much worse: death, betrayal, revenge, and secrets. Wuthering

Walraven 7
Heights is seen as a very dark novel with Catherine and Heathcliffs
love being the only light in the novel, when in fact their love can be
considered the darkest of themes throughout the whole book.

Kimbers interpretation of love in Wuthering Heights follows her most

powerful point: Catherine and Heathcliffs obsession for each other.
She provides intellectual evidence supporting her statement and offers
a deep insight for readers discovering that even though Wuthering
Heights is regarded as a classic love story, its far from it. There is
nothing classic about revenge and deceitfulness, and Kimbers article
provides quality examples of just how unique and dark Catherine and
Heathcliffs love for one another was.
