Heat of Vaporization

03/30/2015

Objective:
The objective of this procedure is to measure the heat of vaporization of water, using the
method of mixtures.

Equipment:
The fallowing equipment was used in this procedure:

-Water (around 200ml)

-Immersion heater coil to fit standard calorimeter (inventory number 1)
-Calorimeter (inventory number 1)
-Laboratory balance and calibrated masses (inventory number 1)
-Steam Generator (inventory number 1)

Procedure:
-It was measured the weight of calorimeter and the cold water.
-It was measured the temperature of cold water.
-It was added to water steam from the steam generator.
-It was measured the final temperature of water + Steam and their weight together.

Data:
After measured the weight and the temperature required, some data were found as follows:
Mass of calorimeter (g)
Mass of calorimeter and cold water (g)
Mass of cold water (g)
Mass of calorimeter ,cold water and steam (g)
Mass of steam (g)
Initial temperature of water (C)
Final temperature of water(C)

With this table is possible calculate the heat of vaporization of steam as followed:

Lv ms+ ms c w ( T 3T 2 )=mw c w ( T 2T 1 ) +m c c c ( T 2T 1 ) +m t c t ( T 2T 1)
Lv X 3+ 3 X 0.5 ( 10022 )=190.7 X 1 ( 2212 ) +42 X 0.22 ( 2212 ) +1 X 1(2212)
Lv =630.8 cal /g

Error:

(630540)
X 100

=16.67 %

Analysis and results:

From the calculus experiment of heat of vaporization, the percentage error is 16.67%. It`s
possible to see that it is acceptable considering the original value from laboratory.

Conclusion:
There are some variable such as temperate of room that makes the measure of specific heat do
not be exact in conventional laboratories but they can get closer to the accepted values.
