Prerequisites : Basi real analysis (i.e. the equivalent of a rst year graduate ourse in
real analysis), in luding point set topology. Basi linear algebra.
Syllabus : The ourse will start o with a dis ussion of the basi prin iples of fun tional
analysis su h as the Hahn-Bana h theorem, the open mapping theorem and the uniform
boundedness prin iple. These are fundamental theorems whi h are used in various areas
of mathemati s su h as applied analysis, representation theory, operator theory, operator
algebras and non ommutative geometry.
In the next part of the ourse we will dis uss basi Hilbert spa e te hniques. These
te hniques play an important role in appli ations as for instan e in approximation theory,
quantum me hani s and in the theory of wavelets. We will then prove elementary fa ts
about bounded operators on Hilbert spa e, in luding ompa t and Fredholm operators. If
time permits, we will present the spe tral theorem for normal operators on Hilbert spa e,
whi h leads to the so- alled Borel fun tional al ulus. Depending on time and interests
of the parti ipants, appli ations to unbounded operators and operator algebras will be
dis ussed.
It is strongly re ommended that those who want to ontinue in the spring semester
2004 with Guoliang Yu's ourse on non ommutative geometry take this ourse.
Grading : There will be no exams. The ourse grade will be based on attendan e, home-
work problems and a presentation during lass on a topi relevant to the ourse. Homework
problems will be dis ussed in the dis ussion se tion (Thursdays 11:00am-12:00pm in SC
1403).
Re ommended literature: There will be no textbook. The following books ontain part
of what I plan to over in the ourse (most books on fun tional analysis will do):
1) John B. Conway, A Course in Fun tional Analysis, Springer GTM 96, 2nd edition
(January 1997).
2) Barry Simon and Stephen Reed, Fun tional Analysis, A ademi Press, 1997, 2nd edition.
3) Gert Pedersen, Analysis Now, Springer Verlag, GTM 118, 1988 (revised edition).
