LESSON #5- VEGETABLES

I. Topic/Grade Level:
Farm Animals
K-3 Special Education
Scienc/Investigation and Experimentation/Speaking and Listening
II.
Standards: [Identify the standards you wil be addressing in your lesson].
Life Sciences
K.2. Different types of plants and animals inhabit the earth. As a basis for understanding this concept:
a. Students know how to observe and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and behavior of
plants and animals (e.g., seed-bearing plants, birds, fish, insects).
b. Students know stories sometimes give plants and animals attributes they do not really have.
c. Students know how to identify major structures of common plants and animals (e.g., stems, leaves, roots,
arms, wings, legs).
Investigation and Experimentation
K.4. Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis
for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop
their own questions and perform investigations. Students will:
a. Observe common objects by using the five senses.
b. Describe the properties of common objects.
c. Describe the relative position of objects by using one reference (e.g., above or below).
d. Compare and sort common objects by one physical attribute (e.g., color, shape, texture, size, weight).
e. Communicate observations orally and through drawings.
Speaking and Listening Standards
K.1- Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with
peers and adults in small and larger groups.
a. Follow agreed-upon rules for discussion (e.g., listening to others and taking turns
speaking about topics and texts under discussion).
b. Continue the conversation through multiple exchanges.
K.4- Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional
detail.
K.5- Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail.
K.6- Speak audibly and express thoughts, feelings, and ideas clearly.

III.Goals and Student Learning Outcomes:

Goal 1: Students will learnt that vegetables can be grown on a farm
Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to list a variety of fruits and
vegetables that grown on farms, gardens, and orchards
Student Learning Outcome 2: Students will be able to describe the different
characteristics of fruits and vegetables (e.g., smell, color,
texture)
Goal 2: Students will learn that we buy vegetables in different places and package them in
different ways
Student Learning Outcome 1: Students will be able to describe what a farmers market is
Student Learning Outcome 2: Students will be able to list three different ways in which

2
fruits and vegetables are sold (e.g., fresh, frozen, canned)

IV.

Learning Environment(s):
This is a face-to-face lesson that takes place in the classroom.
Resources:

V.

Smartboard
Elmo projector and screen
Cans of vegetables, a bag of frozen vegetables, and an assorted group of fresh
vegetables
Jar of popcorn kernels
Reproducible picture of an ear of corn
Packets of a variety of seeds
Assortment of construction paper
Toy cash register
Plastic food (vegetables)
Ipads
Apps- ProloQuo2Go and Dr. Pandas Veggie Garden

VI.

Diversity / Differentiation:
This class is a moderate/severe SDC class with students ranging from kindergarten
through 3rd grade. The lesson has been fully adapted to meet the needs of all learners.
The information is projected on the large screen so it is easy for all students to see. The
students are divided into small groups with classroom aides to assist in the assignment
to describe the farm animals. For those unable to write, the Speech Notes App will be
available. Also for non-verbal students who are also unable to write, the App
Proloquo2Go will be available to assist the students with the assignment.

VII.

Technology Inclusion:

The technology in the class will first include the Elmo projector and screen. This
will enable the pictures of fruits and vegetable to be seen by all students. The App
Speech Notes-Free on the IPads will be used for students who are unable to write.
The App Proloquo2Go will be available for non-verbal students. The App Dr.
Pandas Vegetable Garden will be used for students to grow a virtual vegetable
garden.

VIII. Prior Knowledge: Prior to this lesson, students have: learned about farm animals, dairy
farms and made butter
Lesson Placement in the Unit: This is lesson _5_ of _10__.

IX. Procedures:
1. Lesson Introduction / Anticipatory Set:
Circle Time Discussion: Review farm facts discussed in the previous lesson.
Display colored pictures of farms, gardens, and vegetables on the Elmo or Smartboard.
Be sure to point out key elements in the pictures. Explain to the students that they will
be learning about a different part of farmingvegetales.
2. Direct Instruction:
Vegetables are grown in gardens. Some farmers only grow one crop and others grow
many. The farmers that only grow one crop usually have fields and rows of the same
vegetables or grains. Types of farms that harvest one crop are cotton farms, soybean
farms, corn and wheat farms. Some farms even grow just pumpkins, called a pumpkin
patch. Farmers that grow specialty crops usually sell to large companies that, in turn,
sell the product to us. Show children the vegetable examples (the canned, frozen, and
fresh veggies). Explain terminology, food processing for canned and frozen
vegetables.
Encourage the children to describe the texture, color and smell of each vegetable.
Allow the students to handle the vegetables. Explain to the students that local farmers
sell usfresh produce at Farmers Markets. Sometimes, local grocery stores allow
farmers to sell their produce.
Display the following vocabulary words on the Smartboard:
1.Farmers market- a place for farmers to sell their fruits and vegetables
2. Crop- the result of planting seeds that are grown and harvested
3.Produce- fruits and vegetables
4.Dairy- products made from milk such as butter, cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, cottage
cheese, etc.

3. Student Interaction with lesson content / Guided Practice:

Divide students into four groups for center rotations:
Center #1- Activity (Farmers Market)
You will need: toy cash register, plastic vegetables
On a small table, arrange the play food into groups. Allow the children to shop in the
market. Children should pay for the produce and allow them to take turns running
the cash register. As they are purchasing their produce, have the adult helper ask
which vegetable they are buying. If they dont know, have the adult helper review the
names of vegetables.
Center #2- Art (Ear of corn)
You will need: reproducible picture of an ear of corn, yellow construction paper,
popcorn kernels, glue
Provide each child with a small amount of popcorn kernels and liquid glue.

4
Instruct the children to place dots of glue onto the ear of corn, then cover the dots with
the popcorn kernel. The end result will be a 3-D ear of corn.
Center #3- Math Skills (Sorting seeds)
You will need: a variety of seeds, small cups
Encourage children to examine each seed. Children should become aware of the size,
shape, and color of each seed. Instruct the children to sort the seeds into like groups.
Center #4- Language Skills (Farm vocabulary)
You will need: an assortment of construction paper
Review the farm vocabulary introduced during circle time.
Divide the sheet into four segments by folding paper into fourths. Have the students
write one vocabulary word in each box, and draw a picture representation of each one.
Provide examples of drawings.
Center #5- Students will use the App Dr. Pandas Veggie Garden to grow a virtual
garden.
4. Review / Closure:
Video journal prompt: Which was your favorite farm center today and why?

IX.

X.

Evaluation/Assessment:
Vocabulary words-Using the IPad app Proloquo2Go, load photographs that were introduced at
the beginning of the lesson that correspond to the vocabulary words. Verbally quiz each
student individually to test knowledge of the vocabulary words. Verbally say the vocab. word
and show the written word as well. Ask the student to pick which picture goes with the word
(from a field of 4).
