ED 315 LESSON PLAN #7

Format and Cooperating Teacher Feedback Form

Name: Amanda Dlugi
Content Area: Astronomy: Qualitative Analysis of the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud
Date: 05/02/13
Grade Level: 10th- 12th
Use this template to plan, removing the notes in parentheses and this box. Give this form to your
cooperating teacher for review and a signature before you teach your lesson.

Goal(s):
The Next Generation Science Standards: High School. Space Systems Performance Expectations:
Students who demonstrate understand can:
HS-ESS1-1. Develop a model based on evidence to illustrate the life span of the sun and the role of nuclear
fusion in the suns core to release energy that eventually reaches Earth in the form of radiation.
Science and Engineering Practices: Developing and Using Models, Constructing Explanations and Designing
Solutions, and Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information.

Pre-assess:
Pre-assessment Technique: DNA, Do Now Assignment:
Students will be given the handout, Do Now Activity, 05/02/13, Ms. Dlugi and be given 10 minutes to read
and respond to the following questions to overall pre-assess their understanding of the Kuiper Belt and the Oort
Cloud in our solar system:
Step One: On the back of this sheet of paper, draw a picture of our solar system. In your drawing, locate the
Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. Label everything.
Step Two: Using the chart below, list what you know about the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud in the column
What I Know. In the column, What I Want to Know, write down some questions you have about each of
these structures of our solar system.
Student Characteristics:
- Characteristics of my cooperating teachers fourth block class that our relevant to my lesson involve
the following:
o Some students have known reading/writing disabilities.
o A student has a form of autism.
o Some students are known to not actively participate in class.
o Some students are known to actively participate in class.

Objective(s)::

2008SP

Students will be able to investigate information on the Kuiper Belt, in order to be

able to discuss and solve main questions pertaining to this phenomenon in our
solar system.
Students will be able to select information about the Oort Cloud and apply their
findings to discussion of scientific questions about this component of our solar

system.
Students will be able to assess their understanding of key concepts involving the
Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud in our system.

Assessment:

Informal:
o Throughout the duration of this lesson, I will record the progress of students individually
throughout the day by make abbreviations of students names on a post-it note and recording the
following:
tallying next to their name if they make a comment or answer
a question mark if they ask a question
a check mark if they behaved inappropriately and discipline was issued
o A DNA, Do Now Activity, warm-up exercise will be given in order to pre-assess the
understanding levels of the students on what they already know about the Kuiper Belt and the
Oort Cloud in our solar system. This will be provided to them in the form of a handout DNA:
Do Now Activity, 05/02/13, Ms. Dlugi, as well as posted on the projector board.
o After a class discussion of the material expected to understand upon completing an individual
reading, the comprehension of students will be assessed and observed through a review game of
these concepts, Trash-quetball. I will be making anecdotes of student behavior, participation,
and understanding through monitoring the review.
Formal: There is no plan for formal assessment on this day, however, there will be a unit test issued by
my cooperating teacher sometime within the next week or two that will assess the students on the
concepts that I will be teaching them in this lesson.

___

15-20 minutes: DNA warm-up on the solar system scale, location of the Oort Cloud and Kuiper Belt, and KWL
20 minutes: Set clock and allow students time to read the two articles provided, and answer the reading check/
key concept questions about the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud.
2 minutes: Allow students to review their answers with their elbow buddy.
5-10 minute: Video Clip as a summative to the information.
15 minutes: Review the questions and have a class discussion on the Oort Cloud and the Kuiper Belt.
30 minutes: Play a Trash-quetball Review game on the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud, and winning team gets a
prize.

90 minutes total:
Introduction:
15-20 minutes: DNA warm-up on our solar system scale, and KWL and location of the Oort Cloud and Kuiper
Belt. Students will be provided with a handout and give 10 minutes to answer the questions described above
(pre-assessment). We will then discuss their responses to these questions, as well as the main objectives for the
day.
Steps for instruction:
20 minutes: A time clock will be set, and students will be instructed to individually read the two articles
provided to them and respond to the reading check/ key concept questions about the Kuiper Belt and the Oort
Cloud on a handout.
2 minutes: Students will be given time to review their answers to the questions with the person next to them.
15 minutes: The questions will be reviewed through a class discussion on the Oort Cloud and the Kuiper Belt,
and students will be able to take down the correct material on their sheets to have for studying purposes.
30 minutes: Play a Trash-quetball review game on the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud to provide students with
more time to practice with new concepts that they will be expected to know.
(Higher order thinking questions are located on the handouts and review game provided to the students.)
Strategies for students requiring additional assistance:

If recommended by my cooperating teacher, I will be sure make adjustments to this lesson plan as
needed in order to accommodate the learners in his classroom. For example, to accommodate the needs
of students that have a difficulty in reading/seeing, I will be sure to read each question posted out loud to

the class, as well as provided a printed copy of the questions to the students.
To meet the needs of those who have difficulty understanding the material, I will be monitoring student
understanding throughout the duration of my instructional procedures, so I will be able to address any
individual questions of students, as well as monitor participation. I will also ask for the assistance of my
cooperating teacher to complete these actions effectively so that all students receive the attention they
need. Also, for students that need more practice the material, with the permission of my cooperating
teacher, I will instruct students to come to his room after class on the day of my lesson or also during his
preparation period/ over lunch the following day with any questions that they may have. Because some
students have been absent either one or both previous days to this lesson, I will be sure to discuss with
my cooperating teacher about how to approach this situation so that the learners receive all of the

2008SP

necessary information.
For students that understand the information clearly and are ready to move on, I will be sure to instruct
them to assist classmates that appear to be struggling with the material, and also continue their own
practice with the material. Also, I will be sure to talk to Mr. Coffey about any additional assignments or
tasks that can be provided to these learners.

Closure:
5 minutes: Closure: A bonus question will be issued at the end of the hour, worth an extra 5 points.
The group with the highest number of points will be recognized and congratulated. Students will
receive a post-it note and be instructed to write their name and block on the exit ticket, and be
instructed to answer the following question:
-- On a scale of 1 to 4 how confident do you feel with material on the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud?
1234-

I really dont understand these concepts well, and I need more practice.
I am starting to get it, but I need some help.
I mostly have it but still need help on a few concepts.
Ive got it, and I can teach it to others.
