Professional Practice Experience

During my Professional Practice Experience in the Health Information Management

department at Good Samaritan Hospital I gained knowledge in several different areas concerning
the function of the Health Information Management department. I was introduced to filing and
retrieval of records both paper based and electronically through EPIC. I also learned how to
assemble and analyze charts for physician completeness. I reviewed the process for release of
information learning how to read and authenticate requests and authorization forms. Using EPIC
I learned how to log in the requests for information in order to prepare them for copying. I
observed the copying process and how the requests are sent via paper or electronically.
Additionally, I reviewed the process for preparing RAC audits. I was also introduced to the
Cancer Registry department where I acquired a basic understanding of how information is
gathered and entered into the registry for new cases as well as follow up cases. In Cancer
Registry, I also attained the basic elements of chart abstracting.
