Coachingstudentathleteshasbeenaverylargepartofmycareerasaneducator.
OverthepastsevenyearsIhavehadthepleasuretocoachhighschoolfootball
andwrestling.Icoachatalllevelsincludingfreshmen,JVandvarsityfootball
from20082013.Ifinishedmytimecoachingfootballasanassistantvarsity
coach.

Startingin2012IalsocoachedwrestlingforacoopteamwhichincludesCuba
City,SouthwesternandBentonSchoolDistricts.Workwithstudentsthrough
thesecocurricularactivitieshassignificantimpactsonmycareerand
accomplishmentsasaclassroomteacher.

ThisartifactbestalignswithStandard1.10becauseitshowsmyappreciationof
theimportanceofallaspectsofachildsexperience.Theeducationprocessis
muchbroaderthanjustclassroomlearning.Coachinghelpsstudentslearnand
growinthealternativeenvironmentofcocurricularactivities.Theseactivities
buildrelationshipswithstudents,teachers,parentsandothercommunitymembers
throughinteractionsofeventslikecompetition,fundraisersandhostingofevents.

Workingwithstudentsbothintheclassroomandoutoftheclassroomhelpsto
buildamorecompletelearningcommunity.Thereismuchmoretoastudents
educationthatjustthetimespentinsidetheclassroom.Coachingstudentshelpsto
buildconnectionsbetweenteachers,studentsandthecommunityoftheschool
district.

WhatIlearnedaboutteachingfromthisexperience:
Coaching has given me the opportunity to work with studentsoutsidetherealm
of the traditional classroom. Not only has it helped me to better understand the
students I am working with, but also for them to better understand me. The
relationships we build can be very complicated at times and many students
respond better to teachers they know in multiple lights. Coaching has led to

stronger relationships with students, parents and other teachers in my own


buildingaswellasotherdistricts.
Betterunderstanding astudenthasgiven memoreinformation to drawfromand
better fit the education process for the student. I have been able to tailor
classroom activities to their interest and lives outside the school whether thatis
partoftheactivityIamcoaching,orotherpeopleandeventsinthecommunity.

WhatIlearnedaboutmyselfasaprospectiveadministratorasaresultofthisexperience/artifact:
AsafutureadministratorIhopetopromotetheinteractionofteacherswithstudentsin
asmanyactivitiesaspossible.Ifteacherscanshowandinterestandconcernfor
studentsoutsideoftheclassroomithelpstobuildbetterrelationshipsinwhichstudent
haveagreatervestedinterest.Ifstudentsbelievethatteachersareinterestedinthemas
aperson,notjustastudentinadesk,theyaremorewillingtoputforthextraeffortfor
success.Thesestronger,positiverelationshipsshowthestudentsthatwhathappens,
andwhattheydooutsideoftheclassroomhasaneffectontherelationshipstheybuild
insidetheclassroom.Itcanalsohelptomakestudentsmorecomfortablewithteachers
whichcaninturnleadtoastrongerlearningenvironmentintheclassroomsetting.
