What is Sleep?
1. Are we really resting when sleeping?
2. Studies show that the brain is very active
even when asleep, only time we can observe
real sleep is with
Definition of Non REM Sleep- Non Rapid Eye
Movement.
Three stages: 1. Eyes closed, but easily
awoken; 2. Light sleep, lowered heart rate,
lower body temp, 3. Deep Sleep.

Types of sleepers
3 types of sleepers:
1. lark- Most alert right before lunch and @
noon; get up around 6am, bed time around 9
2. Owl- Most alert around 6pm, does not go
to bed before 3am, and needs and alarm
clock to awaken in the morning. If given the
choice would not wake before 10am.
3. Hummingbird- about 20% of population are
hummingbirds.

napping
Napping- Nap Zone many researchers feel
that it is natural because the brain reaches a
climatic stalemate.
Nappers have a 16% increase in reaction time
SO the hot question is:HOW MUCH SLEEP IS
ENOUGH SLEEP?
As is states on page 73, Essentially it comes
down to whatever amount of sleep is right for
you.(Medina, J)

Why Stress?
Many would ask what is stress?
What happens when people are stressed?
1. There is a physiological response
2. Desire to avoid the situation
3. Loss of control
According to Medina, our bodies are not
physiologically built for long stress periods,
only a few sec.(pg. 75)

Effects of stress
Stress effects the body, especially the heart.
Increase adrenaline produces scarring in
blood vessels, therefore effecting the
cardiovascular system
Chronic stress can also assist with crippling
the immune system.
Lastly, it slow the thinking process and create
loss of concentration.

Effects on Students
Stress can affect students in their learning
process
If a student is stressed from home, it can
effect their performance at school.
Key performance indicators show students do
not perform well in school while stressed.
Emotional stress has huge impact across
society.
