Lakeside

February 26, 2015

I am privileged to recommend my co-worker and friend, Emily Bredberg to a position in your school district.
Emily has been the Media Specialist at Lakeside Elementary for three years, and has been an invaluable
member of our campus. I find it difficult to explain her greatness with the appropriate amount of words that fit
in a recommendation letter. She is truly so much more than a librarian.
Most recently, Emily initiated a Maker Space, honoring learner-choice and creativity too often omitted from
classrooms due to stringent state curriculum expectations. In addition, she partners with learners interested in
film-making, using her expertise in this area to evaluate scripts, set designs, and teach video editing during their
Genius Hour time. Emily has a remarkable ability to engage learners of any age, which builds authentic
relationships with children, and co-workers. She suggests books based on personal interests and reading ability,
checks in on their progress, and follows up for final reactions. A paramount example of the invaluable support
she provides our learners is in her creation of the Student Advisory Committee. Using authentic constructivist
techniques, this years participants launched a school-wide, thematic, creative writing competition, complete
with learner-created QR codes for student submissions, and allows the committee to select the winner.
During her first year at our campus, Emily volunteered to be a co-sponsor of our Student Council, a position she
has retained each year. One project she introduced to Student Council is the national World Book Night. This
project was a perfect fit for our student leaders, promoting campus and community literacy within a service
learning project, a paramount focus of our Council. Emilys genuine desire to make connections, share her own
expertise with co-workers, and foster a love of learning that extends past the school day for students.
Emily adds creativity and authenticity to our curriculum by providing appropriate resources, and teaching
scaffolding workshops within our PBL learning design, while modeling and maintaining a level of information
literacy vital to preparing our future-ready learners.
Emilys complete willingness to serve in any capacity requested, her diligence to district and campus initiatives,
devotion to our learners, and personable demeanor made working with her a joy. I recommend Emily Bredberg
to your school district with absolute confidence. Her top-quality, 21st century skills will be an immediate asset to
your team.
Sincerely,
Lisa Timmerman, M.Ed.
