1. Describe what activity is occurring at this time:


The children are playing a red light, green light activity in the gym.
After this activity, they play a game involving hula hoops.
2. Describe exactly what the child is doing:
J.T. walks to one of the circles that are on the floor.
He sways his arms back and forth over his head.
He bends down and touches the floor.
He bends down and touches one toe.
He twists his body back and forth.
He marches throughout the gym.
He walks throughout the gym.
He runs throughout the gym.
J.T. stands beside his hula hoop.
J.T. stands behind his hula hoop.
J.T. stands in front of his hula hoop.
He skips with the hula hoop around him.
He hops on one foot with the hula hoop around him.
He slides with the hula hoop around him.
J.T. puts his hula hoop on the floor.
He gets inside his hula hoop and puts his hands on his head.
3. Describe any interactions between the teacher and the child:
The gym teacher is instructing all the children, including J.T., on
what to do.
The teacher says to J.T., Stand behind your hula hoop.
The teacher reviews the commands (beside, behind, etc.) with
J.T.
He throws his hula hoop at the gym teacher.
She tells him not to throw his hula hoop.
4. Describe any interactions between the child and other
children:
He turns to the boy beside him and says something to him.

He bumps into a girl and they both fall down.


He and the girl both get up, look at each other, and continue
running.

Anecdotal Record Self-Reflection


1. What did I learn about this child from todays observation?
Based on observing J.T. today, I learned that he has well developed
gross motor skills. He did very well on the physical aspects of the
activity. However, he had some trouble with the directional terms.
When playing the directional command game, J.T. performed the
directions incorrectly. The teacher had to review the terms with him,
and he continued to get them wrong.
2. Are there any modifications that I would suggest to continue to
support this child as a learner?
I would concentrate on directional commands with J.T. I would continue
to use the hula hoop activity as well as add additional directional
command games. This would allow him to gain an understanding of
directional commands.
3. What affirmations would I give to the teacher who is working
with this child? Be specific in what you saw the teacher do
that worked with this child.
I would tell the gym teacher, I really like how you reiterated the
directional terms with J.T. I believe that constantly reinforcing this
concept will lead to J.T.s understanding.
4. List appropriate questions to ask the teacher after observing
this child today.
Do you play any other directional games with the children?
5. What questions would be appropriate to ask the parents about
the observable behavior today?
Does J.T. get a lot of time to play outside?
Is he active?
6. What should I focus on the next time that I observe this child?
Next time I would like to focus on his social emotional development. I
would also focus on his gross motor development to look for new skills
and verify the previous ones.
7. If this were an actual anecdotal of a child in my classroom,
what would be the appropriate action to do with this
information?
