INSPIRATION

Nowadays roads are usually paved with bituminous pavements upon a suitably compacted
soil subgrade . But in due course of time the subgrade generally gets damaged due to various
natural as well as artificial calamities. So it is often emphasized to improve the subgrade
characteristics using certain additional materials such as waste plastic bottles, natural and
artificial fibres, tyre chips, etc. As India lies in a sub tropical zone availability of coconut is in
abundance. The coconut husk which is usually wasted could be used for improvising the
subgrade characteristics as it has various favourable properties such as cheap availability,
high mechanical strength, etc .In addition to this coconut fibre is relatively water proof and is
one of the few natural fibres salt water and microbial attack. So coconut fibre reinforced
subgrade is often considered to be a better option in comparison with the normal subgrade.
