Rome Day Five: Art & Architecture

Grade: 3rd

SOL:
3.1 The student will explain how the contributions of ancient Greece and Rome have
influenced the present world in terms of architecture, government (direct and representative
democracy), and sports.
Rationale: The main purpose of this unit is to help students understand the importance of
ancient Rome in history and to learn about its contribution to the modern world. This lesson will
focus on the contributions that the Romans made in regards to the arts and architecture. Students
need to understand where some of our arts have developed and where some of our architecture
pieces have come from.

Sculptures (of gods, goddesses, political leaders)

Arch in buildings came from Rome
Temples, aqueducts, roads, sewers, columns, amphitheaters (Coliseum)
Aqueducts- enabled Romans to bring water from distant sources into their
cities and towns to supply public baths, fountains and private homes
Colosseum- where the Roman games were played

Objectives of the lesson


SWBAT identify the Colosseum when given an option of pictures
SWBAT recognize and identify the purpose of the aqueducts of the ancient Romans
SWBAT differentiate between mosaics, sculptures and paintings of the ancient Romans
Lesson Opening: What did we talk about yesterday, what did you learn? (take responses). Today
we are going to continue to discuss the contributions the Romans made to the arts and
architecture. We are going build our own aqueducts. Using paper towel rolls and other things
around the classroom, you all are going to work in teams to build your aqueduct.
Connections: Knowing and understanding the Roman art and architecture is important because
there are some aspects of their work that are still used today, suchs as mosaics, sculptures,
paintings and arches. Being able to show the similarities may help students make more
connections between the ancient world and todays world.

students will work together to build an aqueduct that stretches across 3 feet
Students were not allowed to use glue, tape, etc.
Through trial and error students will develop teamwork skills

Aqueducts from each class
Assessment:
questioning before, during and after the activity
Closure: Today we built aqueducts. Someone remind me what these were used for in Rome.
(take responses). Can you imagine how much work it took to build these out of stone? You all
had to work together, make measurements and use trial and error.
