Leadership skills in the health care world are very important to learn and acquire.
What does being a leader mean or what does leadership mean? According to Feather, A
leaders role is to elicit effective performance from others. This involves leading and
influencing the development of shared values, vision and expectations to enhance their
organizations planned goals and overall effectiveness (Feather, 2009).
In the management style assessment tool I scored the highest in style 2, shepherd.
Having a shepherd personality means I am a follower. I predicted my style before I
scored myself. I feel my personality, emotion, and mood alter and change every day due
to my current lifestyle.

In each column, I had a couple 4-5 score, but mostly 2-3s. I

believe some of the shepherd traits can be viewed in a negative and positive light, but
what is important for me right now is that I function as a team player. The following
strengths I discovered by doing this assessment include: result-focused, people pleasing,
informal, accommodating, change-oriented, long run focused, and acting as an exhorter.
I plan to maintain these skills and as well, learn leadership skills.
At Kuakini Medical Center, I practice a few leadership skills. It did not come
easily as I had to practice. The more comfortable and confident in my duties, the more I
use my leadership skills. There is a positive correlation among duration of position,
confidence and comfort level, and use of leadership skills. For example, one of my
duties is to communicate effectively with all health care workers. I am able to take
initiative, delegate, critical-think, set goals, and maintain organization.
In my article, Giltinane describes a situational leadership style. Since the nursing
world is constantly changing and improving, leaders need to learn multiple ways to

handle different situations. Their strengths include being incredibly flexible, easily
adaptable, calm, focused, efficient, supportive, and observant. Situational leaders
develop the skill to identify the performance, competence, and commitment of others.
They have the ability to turn followers into strong leaders. I prefer this approach
because these leaders can adopt many different leadership styles (Giltinane, 2013).
There are certain strategies or approaches to strengthen my leadership skills. To
state the obvious, I must feel confident and that simply just takes time and experience.
Working in a health care facility will also strengthen and jumpstart my path in developing
leadership skills. Nurses have so many responsibilities that sometimes it gets overlooked
or ignored. Workshops also can contribute to building a leadership background. To
look at this exercise in another point of view, our classmates should score us.
