http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U0lPXcYvOfk

Recognise the classifications of woods and their properties.

Understand the lifecycle of timber products.
Gain understanding of the manufacturing processes involved
in making wooden products.
Be able to suggest specific timbers for certain products.

Outcomes
MUST tackle a previous exam question on woods and their
uses.
SHOULD use the materials quiz to assess their learning needs,
and judge the progress they have made.
COULD go on to read over revision guides to consolidate
their learning.

AGAINST

The term grain refers to the alternating regions of

relatively darker and lighter wood resulting from the
differing growth parameters occurring in different
seasons (i.e., growth rings).
In describing the application of a woodworking
technique to a given piece of wood, the direction of
the technique may be:
with the grain (easy; giving a clean result)

ACROSS

END

against the grain (heavy going; giving a poor result

such as chipping or tear-out)
across the grain (direction of cut is across the grain
lines, but the plane of the cut is still aligned with
them)
end grain (at right angles to the grain, for example
trimming the end of a plank)

such as Boxford to make
products like chair/table legs
handles and ornaments.

Manufacturing processes:
Manufactured Boards
There are a number of MANUFACTURED BOARDS such as:

MDF, Plywood, Veneers, Hard

Board, Block Board, Chip Board.
Due to the hybrid nature of these products we are to cover these
within composite materials.

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Objectives: Gain understanding of the

manufacturing processes involved in

Recycled Products
Wood Pellets.
Wood pellets are usually made of
compressed sawdust that is a
waste product from other industries
(e.g sawmills). The pellets are held
together by the natural lignin in the
wood
- no glue is needed.

as it helps soil
to retain
moisture.

Softwoods Scots Pine.

Strong, cheap, easy to work, readily available.

Fairly knotty but not going to be on display in joinery.

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Hardwood Ash.

Open-grained so easy to work, tough and flexible. Good elastic

qualities, works well.
Not the most exciting colour or grain either needs staining or
put to use where looks arent important.

Hardwood - Oak

Very strong, heavy and durable. Hard & tough.

Open - grained.
Contains tannic acid which corrodes iron & steel (need to think
about fixings).

Hardwood - Balsa

Very soft and light.

Ideal for models.
Quite expensive for what it is, again not the most attractive.

Mitre Joints

A dowel joint is a butt joint

reinforced with wooden pegs.

Neat joint
Simple joint
Strong if the correct glue is
applied

Cons:

You have to be accurate when

drilling the holes

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Dowell Joint.

Pros:

Pros:

Neat joint
Strong, rigid joint due to large gluing area
Most of the joint is hidden

Cons:

Difficult to cut the joints

Poor resistance to tension

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Mortise and Tenon.

Pros:

...

Relatively easy to make with hand tools

Large drying area
Reasonably strong

Cons:

Not as strong or as durable as mortise

and Tenon or dovetailed joints.

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Halving joint.

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Bridle joint.
...

Pros:

Relatively strong
Large gluing area
Quick and easy to make

Cons:

Marking out needs to be

accurate

Pros:
Easy to make
Easy to use

Cons:

Basic and weakest wooden joint

Only glue holding the wood together

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Butt Joint

Pros:
Easy to make
Easy to use
Large gluing area
Available in a few varieties
Can be strengthened with dowels

Cons:
Weak joint
Can be broken quite easily

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Lap Joint.

Pros:

Easy to make you only make one

section
Strong joint

Cons:
Accuracy is essential as its related to
strength

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Rebate / Housing Joint.

Pros:
Strongest of all joints
Large gluing area
Interlocking joint
If done accurately glue is not
required
Attractive appearance
Cons:
Time consuming to produce
Joints have to be effectively
done to be useful

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Dovetail Joint

Pros:
Easy to make
More surface area for gluing
Strong joint
Used for many applications
Nice appearance
Cons:
Joints have to be accurate to be useful
Time consuming due to amount of joints

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Comb Joint

Biscuit are used to strengthen

joints, they are concealed within
other joints

Nails

Nails are used in conjunction with

Joints such as butt joints to
strengthen the joints

GCSE RESISTANT MATERIALS & PRODUCT DESIGN

Counter sunk screws:

Round head screw

These are used

for decoration
Purposes.

These are added for additional

strength. They are countersunk to

K.D.Fs are basically

alternative methods of
attaching materials.
Their biggest asset is that
they can be undone and
materials will come apart

A lot of self-assembly furniture such as from IKEA uses

KDF to enable easy assembly.
