Objectives
A. Standard: 1.4.2.A: Write organized, detailed descriptive poems and stories that
include literary elements.
B. Students will be able to write their own stories using expressive language.
Content
A. Expressive Language freely writing without structural or audience constraints
Materials
A. Wiesner, D. (author & illustrator). (2006). Flotsam. New York: Clarion.
B. Students hand-drawn pictures or photographs
Procedure
A. Introductory Activities
1. The class will gather in a circle on the floor.
2. The teacher will ask the students about what makes a good writer. They will
discuss details and descriptive writing.
3. The teacher will present the book, Flotsam by David Wiesner.
a. As the class is reading the book (there are no words) they will infer what
the story is about.
B. Developmental Activities
1. The class will discuss how they were able to make inferences about what the
story was about. They will realize that many people are able to flip through
the book and create a different story from it, even though it is exactly the
same.
2. Then, the teacher will ask the students to get out their hand-drawn pictures or
photographs. (These will be brought in from the day before. They are allowed
to be anything that the students wanted, as long as they are appropriate.)
3. She will collect all of the photographs and hand-drawn pictures. She will
shuffle them out and randomly pass them out.
4. Each student will receive someone elses picture. They will use this picture to
create their own story in expressive mode. They will be given about fifteen
minutes to write.

C. Concluding Activities
1. The students will then pair up with another student and share their picture and
their expressive story.
2. The students will give one another feedback and get a chance to share their
own writing.
3. Then, the whole class will reconvene and a few students will get the
opportunity to share their work.
D. Evaluative Activities
1. The stories will be collected and evaluated at the end of the class.
2. The teacher will walk around the room and informally assess the students as

Enrichment Activities
1. Students that finish early will be able to draw a picture that will continue their

Adaptations/Modifications
A. Students that struggle with hand writing will be given a computer or iPad to type
their stories.
B. Students may be allowed to move around the room and sit with a clipboard if they
have difficulty sitting still.
