Assignment #4 Solution
Problem 1
A 175 by 950 mm 20f-E D. Fir-L glulam roof beam spans 10.133 m between columns.
The dead load for the bean is 10.4 kN/m (including self weight) and the snow load is
19.5 kN/m. Normal duration loading and dry service conditions apply. Flat trusses
spaced at 600 mm on centre provide full lateral support to the top of the beam. The
total load deflection limit is L/180. Is this design acceptable?

Problem 2
Select the size of a 20f-E Spruce-Pine glulam beam to support the dead and live loads
shown in the accompanying illustration. The load duration is normal and dry service
conditions apply. The dead load includes an allowance for self-weight of the beam.
Lateral support is provided at the supports only. Consider moment and shear only.
Use the beam selection tables in Wood Design Manual 2010.
