Adventures of Billoo the Pariah dog

By Janhavi Lakshminarayanan

Hey Billoo, said Kumar. You lazy dog!

People of Malloor call me Billoo the Pariah dog or
street dog. I grew up in Kumars street although I was
born in the next street. Every day he wishes me on
his way to the farm, where he works.
The Sun was high up in my sky. Aah! It was time for
my nap.

A roti, the size of a big pumpkin appeared before me.

The spicy smell made my mouth water. I opened my
mouth wide, ready to bite off a piece of the roti.

I snapped my jaws and woke up from my tasty

dream. My nose instantly caught the aroma of freshly
cooked food from Kumars house. I saw Kumars wife
cooking in the big brown pot. This was not a dream.
And I was ravenous!

I was very clever! I waited for her to finish cooking.

When she went to collect some sticks, I ran into their
hut, grabbed a piece of roti and dashed out.
I sat under my favourite mango tree and gobbled it
up. Mmmmm it was so tasty!

It was time to play. As I walked along the neighbours

farm, I spotted a flock of hen. They were pecking on
some seeds.
Poor hens! They look so bored. I must play with
them, I thought.

Woof! Woof! I barked and chased them around.

Cluck! Cluck! They ran helter skelter. I think they
really enjoyed the game.

Just then, I heard a familiar sound. Thump! Thump!

This means only one thing elephants in the village!
I rushed to the spot and started barking loudly.
Kumar came running.
What is it Billoo? asked Kumar. When he saw the
elephants, he called all his friends. They came with
drums and trumpets and sticks.
Boom! Boom! Toot! Toot! They made such a
hullabaloo. I too barked loudly until the elephants
walked away.

Brave boy Billoo! Thanks for helping us keep the

village safe, Kumar said, patting my head.
I think you will like this special roti treat.
He gave me a roti. I wagged my tail happily and ate
it up quickly. I was ready for more adventures!
